Baroka FC clear for Vodacom League Play-offs

Posted: 6 June 2011 Time: 13:41

The legal wrangles that had been threatening to derail the Vodacom League Play-offs were finally put to rest on Sunday, paving way for the games to kick off in harmony in Cape Town.

A series of cases have dragged through the legal boardrooms at Safa over the past few weeks but they were all settled at arbitration yesterday.

The head of legal affairs at Safa, Nathi Ngcobo, confirmed that all cases have now been exhausted following weeks of boardroom activity.

“The three cases that were pending were resolved yesterday at the final stage of appeal, which is arbitration, with all teams that had lodged appeals not succeeding,” Ngcobo tells

First to be settled was the case involving Nedbank Cup semi-finalists Baroka FC and Winners Park in the Limpopo which saw the former being given the green light to proceed to the Mother City.

Baroka won the Limpopo League but Winners Park had lodged an appeal claiming Baroka had fielded an ineligible player.

There was also a case in the Eastern Cape involving winners FC Buffalo and second-placed FC Tornado which was also settled at arbitration with the William Mugeyi-coached Buffalo emerging victors.

The case brought by Tornado against Buffalo was that the later had used an improperly registered player.

The last province with a case that stretched to arbitration was Free State but the matter was abandoned after Juventus, the team that had lodged an appeal, did not pitch up, leaving Roses United to go through.

Steve Pila, head of competitions at Safa, adds that all teams are expected in the official competition hotel this afternoon ahead of the opening match tomorrow.

The Inland Stream comprises Highlands Park (Gauteng), Ga-Rankuwa United (North West), Baroka FC (Limpopo) and Sivutsa (Mpumalanga) while the Coastal Stream comprises FC Buffalo (Eastern Cape), Roses United (Free State), Durban Stars (KZN), Chippa United (Western Cape) and Real Madrid (Northern Cape).
