Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round-up

Afcon round-up

Posted: 2011-06-05 22:52

Knowledge Musona scored twice and Collins Mbesuma and Tangeni Shipahu were on the Africa Cup of Nations scoresheets at the weekend but there were contrasting fortunes for their countries.

Kaizer Chiefs' Musona scored a late penalty to give Zimbabwe a disputed 2-1 win over Mali and their first victory in Group A, which leaves them two points behind group leaders Cape Verde Islands.

But the game was marred by fighting between the players at the end as tempers boiled over.

A thumping 3-0 win for Zambia over Mozambique in Chingola on Saturday ends the hopes of the Mambas and their South African-based star Elias Pelembe after they qualified for the last tournament in Angola in 2010.

Mbesuma got the last goal in a comprehensive victory with the other two netted by former Jomo Cosmos star Chris Katongo, who now plays in Greece. Katongo had been an injury doubt on the eve of the match but recovered in time to lead his side to an emphatic victory.

Shipahu of AmaZulu was another Premier Soccer League star who got among the goals in the Nations Cup qualifier but his was only a consolation strike as Namibia got thumped 4-1 at home in Windhoek on Saturday by Burkina Faso – one of their heaviest defeats ever.

It means the Brave Warriors, who also had Rudolph Bester of Maritzburg United in their side, are out of the qualifying competition.

Former Black Leopards midfielder Manqoba Kunene scored for Swaziland but they went down to Sudan at home and still have not taken a single point from four matches in the 2012 qualifying campaign.

Denis Onyango kept a clean sheet as Uganda moved closer to their first Nations Cup appearance since 1978 by beating Guinea Bissau 2-0 in Kampala on Saturday.

But the occasion was marred when former Chiefs star David Obua threw his shirt at the bench when he was taken off in the second half.

Wow! Like it or not, Pitso is da man. He proved to many dat the South African coaches should nt b undermined. Starting with da days of Clive Barker, Bafana Bafana had proved that the future of South African football relies on Local talent

Swona Champ!: 2011-06-06 09:09

sean: 2011-06-06 09:21

gabo: 2011-06-06 09:23

Trevor, What does Khama mean in Shona? Or is it a mistake he must be in The Mighty Zebras??? Just joking Congrads Zim! Hope you will qualify cause The striped wild horses have qualified without a lose! however, Togo is the lasT to receive 2 kicks! Looks like we will have more SADC TEAMS represented in this AFCON!!

Philantrophist Tebza : 2011-06-06 09:29

Zebras seems like the new giant of African football & with more Arabs & West African countries failing to qualify its our turn in Southern Africa & Zebras rule!

Tenta: 2011-06-06 10:36

my apology to the Zebras for not recognising them. you guyz are to good this time. Congrats for qualifying.

Itunes22: 2011-06-06 10:39

@Gabo;
Mate,Africa had no boundaries before,Its Europeans who made this mess of Demacations! So you are bound to have all ethinics with different names like Khama,Mwanjale etc.Well Congrats to the Zebraz, they did well & it raises eyebrows to see them being the 1st African country to qualify for the Nations Cup!The Southern part of Africa is proving to be serious instead of being the whipping boys of African soccer!Botswana even surprised themselves by refusing to be bullied by Big teams from the North. But the search for the powerhouse of Southern Africa should be established soon whilst the Zebras are still at the top of their game,Zambia need to be retried to check if they are still the regional bully. In the meantime its good to see local coaches being prefered than Western or whoever for that matter who's not African!!Chimbetu a Zim great musician once sang about SOUTHERN AFRICA!!!

dube : 2011-06-06 11:24
