Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi to meet Irvin Xhoza over future

Lekgwathi to meet Khoza

Posted: 2011-05-28 21:54

Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi revealed that he will meet club Chairman Irvin Khoza to discuss his future with the club.

Lekgwathi’s contract with the newly crowned Nedbank Cup Champions comes to an end next month and having led his club to a treble this season after winning their third Cup on Saturday, the skipper says he is convinced that the club will renew his contract.

There are rumours that the defender could be forced to retire at the end of the season, but he has assured Pirates fans that he will still continue to play next season.

“Now that we are finished with the Nedbank Cup and the League, I will meet the chairman to discuss my future,” he tells KickOff.com after his side beat Black Leopards 3-1 in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Mbombela Stadium.

“I still want to play and my legs still want to continue playing. My heart is with the club and I want to continue playing for Pirates,” he says.

Having had a successful season with the Buccaneers, Lekgwathi has also appealed to the management to keep the same players and coach for next season as they now aim to conquer Africa.

“It’s not going to be easy in Africa is going to be tough but I’m happy that we have a former player like William Okpara who has the experience of playing in Africa.

“But also as players we know each other well now and the issue of the coach, the chairman is the owner of the team, he is the one who must deal with this issue, but I think we must just keep the same team and make sure next season we continue with our good work,” he says.

Mr khoza must renew lekgwathi's contract

Jam Jam: 2011-05-30 10:03

I was smiling when I hear that Lucky "my captain" Lekgwathi was presented with PSL Chairman special award.
Lucky has always been a motivator to the fans during the past years when Pirates was not winning cups. So the man deserves another 1 or 2 years contract.
Even if he can go into the bench handing his captaincy arm belt to the friendly Benson Mhlongo, he will be available to cover any gap left by other suspended or injured defender because Lucky can play any position at the back

Jam Jam: 2011-05-30 12:48

Khoza, please keep Lucky in the team.
Even if he goes to the bench because Musona, we will always love Lekgwathi in the same way we used to cheer dangerous Bernard "shoes" Lushozi from the bench.

Mr Lekgwati has won us the treble, but for me I agree with those who say he must be given a casual job for him to survive not because we are expecting much from him, football is not within his mind but its within his heart, well done Lekgwathi but you are old now.

Lucky has archieved what some of Orlando Pirates' past legends can only dream of. For me this is a perfect time for him to bow out in style. He has archieved a lot and his name deserves to be up there with the best of the best that have ever graced Orlando Pirate Football Club. If i were him, i would ask the chairman to give another role in the club other than playing. I'm afraid if he signs for one more season, fans will forget about the treble and the contribution he has made to the team throghout his carrier. My advice to you Lucky is, don't put yourself in a position where you will have to be sent to retirement by the boo boys.
