The Zimbabwean squad for the crucial Group A Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mali next month continues to be dominated by South African-based players with nine players, including Esrom Nyandoro being called-up.
Nyandoro, who had been dropped in rather strange circumstances for the last match that the Warriors played against Mali in March, returns alongside Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona who had missed the last game due to a shoulder injury.
Coach Norman Mapeza has requested that the players report to camp as early as next week as he intends having a two week camp before the match – which the Warriors desperately need to win and will be played in Harare on June 5.
Mapeza has already sent letters to South African clubs asking them to release the players just after they play their closing League matches this weekend.
Zimbabwe – ranked 126 in the world and 35 on the continent – have two points from their opening three matches and will need to win all their remaining three games to stand a chance of qualifying.
The Warriors squad is:
Goalkeepers: W. Arubi (Dynamos, Zimbabwe), T. Kapini (Platinum Stars, South Africa), M. Jani (Motor Action, Zimbabwe)
Defenders: C. Nhamoinesu (Zaglebie Lubin, Poland), M. Mwanjali (Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa), T. Sweswe (Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa), D. Vheremu (FC Platinum, Zimbabwe), Q. Amin (Gunners, Zimbabwe), N. Kaseke (AC Omonia, Cyprus), G. Mapemba (CAPS United, Zimbabwe), T. Kumbuyani (Blue Ribbon, Zimbabwe)
Midfielders: E. Nyandoro (Sundowns, South Africa), T. Nengomasha (Chiefs, South Africa), V. Nyoni (Germinal Berschot, Belgium), Q. Antipas (Sonderivske, Denmark), K. Billiart & W. Katsande (both Ajax Cape Town, South Africa), J. Majabvi (LASK Linz, Austria), O. Karuru (US Boulogne, France)
Strikers: K. Musona (Chiefs, South Africa), N. Mushekwi (Sundowns), E. Sadomba (Al Hilal, Sudan), S. Sithole (CAPS United)
