TP Mazembe disqualified from Champs League

Posted: 2011-05-14 20:50

Following a complaint filed by authorities of Tanzanian club Simba Sports after their CAF Champions League match against TP Mazembe, the Confederation of African football launched an investigation on the eligibility of Janvier Besala Bokungu.

The findings of the investigation were submitted to the Organising Committee for CAF Interclub’s Competitions, and the result led to the decision to disqualify the Congolese club on the basis of Chapter VIII (Fraud), article 24, article 26 (Qualification of players) and article 29 of Orange CAF Champions League regulations.

According to the CAF statement, the replacement will be made after a play-off match, to be played next week in a neutral venue, between Simba and Wydad of Casablanca.

This disqualification means that the Corbeaux will not be able to defend their African Champions League title, which they won for the last two seasons, allowing them to make it to the final of the Club World Cup in December.
