Tuks pip Leopards to play-offs

Posted: 2011-05-08 20:17

University of Pretoria have qualified for the Promotional Play-Offs after beating FC AK 2-0 at home, pipping Black Leopards who could only manage a 1-0 win over United FC.

In another crucial match, this time at the bottom of the Coastal Stream, Nathi Lions saved themselves from the drop with a fine 3-1 away victory over Blackburn Rovers, while a similar win for last placed Hanover Park was not sufficient - to save the Mother City outfit.

Tuks got off to a flying start in Pretoria, pounding their opponents' goal but were either thwarted by brilliant saves from 20-year-old goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo or missed the target altogether.

It was end-to-end stuff with Tuks' man between the posts, Siya Mngoma, also called upon to make a few saves, but in the second period, Steve Barker shuffled his pack, which saw the midfielders coming to the fore and within a short time - FC AK were two goals down.

Joseph Mthombeni opened the scoring in the 57th minute from close range and four minutes later, Thokozani Sekotlong headed his sixth of the current campaign when he reached high to steer a corner kick home.

In other Inland games, Jomo Cosmos beat Witbank Spurs 3-2 at Makhulong with Bamusa Sono, Thabiso Hlalele and Alton Meiring on the score sheet, and already relegated Batau FC overcame Dynamos 2-1.

At the Coast, Bay United who will soon play Cosmos for a spot in the lucrative PSL lost 3-1 away to Thanda Royal Zulu while African Warriors grabbed all three points after downing FC Cape Town 1-0 at the NNK Rugby Stadium.

I hate NFD Play-off.

My wish was for PSL promotion/relegation has always been:

1 - Number of PSL teams is increased from 16 to 18.
2 - PSL automatically relegates two teams in position 17 and 18, and promotes the both leaders NFL inland + Coastal streams (this would be Cosmos and and Bay United in this case).
3 - Two PSL teams in position 15 and 16 goes to play-off with the two runners-up in NFL stream.

This will make both PSL and NFL competitive.

For the following two reasons, I will not accept PSL excuse that 18 teams will cause a delay towards the end of the season

1 - SAFA has now cancelled a One-Day Telkom Charity Spectacular. Now there is more space for PSL matches.
2- Local soccer supporters were bored in the previous weeks waiting for about 10-days for the teams to play. The samething happens now to other teams not in Nedbank semis
3 - I would not mind if either Telkom cup is eliminated, under the condition that the prices for PSL winner and losers are doubled. Imagine if PSL winner gets R40m and runner-up gets R15m. Nedbank cup can remain since it is a platform for lower division teams and their players to showcase the talents.
