Nigeria Under-20 win the 2011 African Youth Championship

Nigeria are triumphant in AYC

Posted: 2011-05-01 18:00

Nigeria's Under-20s, the Flying Eagles, won the African Youth Championship title for a record sixth time after beating the Cubs of Cameroon 3-2 in a thrilling Final.

An even first half ended scoreless but the match burst into life 15 minutes from the end with Kayode Olarenwaju smacking home after springing the cubs' offside trap.

Five minutes later, it was 2-0 to Nigeria as Uche Nwofor scored from the spot after Kayode was fouled in the area by the Cameroonian keeper.

With the game seemingly done and dusted, Cameroon launched a great comeback with two quickfire goals from Frank Ohandza and Edgar Sally.

But substitute Terry Envoh rounded up the scoring barely a minute into extra time to complete a fantastic tournament.

Very good goal keeper.
You are good Kayode, sorry about the red card.
Thanks coach, good team overall.
I hear Ghanaians are angry, they hate us because we’re good.
They wish it was them.

Now that the cup it's back to us, we have a lot to do because we have no time to waste and Coach Obuh must invite more players to this team so that they can form a solid squared for the world cup in few months to come. Kudos to Cameroon too, they tried their best but Allah is on our side. Once again congratulations to 9ja. God bless Nigeria!

No better way to congratulate our re-elected president.

Their performance is not convincing enough. A lot of work has to be done b4 the WYC especially in the defence line. I wish them the best of luck.

Congrats my boys, made me proud today!!! However, I do have some thoughts: John Obuh is a bone head coach, his decision to take out a midfielder so as to introduce an attacking minded player in stanley okoro cost us the lead and consequently sent the game to ET. We have a goalie that has good reflexes but no technical ability... the 2 goals scored could have been made tougher on the strikers if his positioning and timing was on par. He needs intensive training before the WC. I think he should be sent to go work with Shorunmu for at least a month. With all that said, I, again, congratulate my boys on a historic victory over a rival in Cameroon!

Congratulaions Nigeria!!!!!

Up flying Eagles of Nigeria, up coach John Obuh. This is the era of good omen in Nigerian football. For the first time Nigeria beat Cameroun in the final of a major competition. Era of Goodluck in Nigerian football. More work still needs to be done and more players needs to be recalled for the world cup. But before then let me enjoy this victory!

Super Eagles winning in all fronts, Dream Team (U23) performing wonders, Super Falcons scoring big, surely this is a sign of a new era.

The little guy (Keeper) is indeed very good. He leads the counter attack by not holding too long to the ball. He throws the ball out fast, smartly and kicks well. Too bad about his height but his other good qualities overshadows his litttle height. I like his style. Well done the Flying Eagles. We are back and this time back to stay

Congrats Nigeria but I'm not convinced this team can do well at the world cup, conceding 2 goals in 8 mins show a mediocre performance, the goalie is jittery, our right back is slow and lazy (probably due to old age). Even the Obuh's substitution cost us the Camerounian equalizer, he will be exposed more at the world cup. @Wiseman you can write whatever you like, na you get your hand. Please attack issues not persons, we are all here for the development of Nigeria football. .........Billion Original

@cosmiradogh, U know everymatch comes with a very different gameplan and expectation. Ghana has never been a walkover for Nigeria, and the fact that they missed out of the olympics will further add much grudge and interest to that match. I believe that if the midfield is worked on so that they boys can have enough cover for the defence, i am sure that the attack can deliver anytime , anyday. The attackers are World Class, I can assure you that.@Segun, I am not Chyna Acherou and have never met him, i was not even opportuned to follow his tweet at twitter, I am not a journalist either, i am just a passionate follower of the round leather game.I , nonetheless agree with you on the need for journalists to impress it upon the coaches of our national team to use only the best legs, ofcourse that is why it is a National team, only the Best can be good enough. If our coaches can do this, then Nigeria have no business with failure.Overall I think a new dawn is here, U23 doing well, U20 are African Champions, so we will not lack good players in the next three years, but this is the time to build on it.
@Flying Eagles, Congratulations!!! Obuh good Job, but work on the team's psyche especially when they are leading. Its not everytime you throw away a two goal lead and still survive. The performance in the final was very good, they were purposeful and direct in their approach. I was encouraged with the play. Columbia, here we come!!!

dona: 2011-05-01 22:16

Once again congrats to F/eagle and coach Obun but the truth must be told,we can't perform like this in w/c in june just 2 months away,i will suggest we bring in more quality players with another good goal keeper, this guy tried(Paul) but is not good enough for the team ,maybe as second choice g/keeper but not as first choice g/k and there some other areas need to be getting players for,i think what help us little today is the fact that we have few of players played together in last 17 w/c so the understading is there little,we need to invite more of the players join the team, players like Sanni and Ojabu, and some other young quality players to beef up the team before the w/c in june.Last not the least i think Mr,Obuh need to improve on his technical ability,it almost cost us the match today.
Thanks

kempi: 2011-05-01 22:27

@OkonHouseBoy: while i can't swear that all the boys are under the age of 20 yrs, i will say they r very young boys cos i saw them at close range b4, during, and after 2 matches - d semi final and final games. they r very young boys man! they look a lot bigger when u see them from a distance on d pitch. and even much bigger on TV screens. [i suppose we all know/agree that images look more beautiful/elaborate on TV]. so i'll plead u take it slightly kindly with the team, and encourage the.
i may have a bit of a worry, if u use this medium to try to sell ur boss's son to the coach. it isn't completely wrong; but isn't totally right neither. u can suggest it more subtly tho. no offence meant.
in all, the boys did well. u

Congrats!! They can now dedicate the cup to a fallen hero, OLUBAYO ADEFEMI.

Soccerwisdom: 2011-05-01 22:58

Great job boys, well done. Obuh what remains is to fortify the team. The AYC has been a good test of the team's character, some of the guys that did it well at the last U17 should be returned to the team, with a few new faces in all departments especially defence and then the goal scorers.
Well done, let us enjoy the victory.

Smoke: 2011-05-01 23:16

@ kepler

You shouldn't point fingers at Super Eagles for not being able to have a "winning mentality". The only mentality we have is win at junior level by all means necessary by grooming older men instead of grooming and exposing younger players of the right age.

I am Nigerian and I'm proud of what our boys did in South Africa but when will there be a successful transition to the senior level? We stood proud when our "U-17" took apart Spain in 2007 by way of penalties and yet Spain had the last laugh by having 7 members of that particular team successfully graduating to lift the concluded 2010 World Cup in South Africa. While that has happened we are still stuck in pursuit of junior World Cup glory instead of using the same stage to build and expose real boys of 20 years old or younger.

Gentlemen, we and the rest of Africans are cheating and winning at junior level at the expense of not properly and effectively using the very programme that produces real talent. Europe and South America are using the tournaments to produce the best in the world today, but why can't we? Everybody knows the answer to that. The naked truth can be ugly and might not sit well with my fellow Nigerians but it is the reality...and we must face it head on.

Nonetheless, good work Flying Eagles. Long live Nigeria!

Richie: 2011-05-02 00:09

Congratulations to the coach and to the players for winning the trophy and putting smiles on the faces of soccer-loving Nigerians (home and abroad). I also congratulate the Cameroonians players for a good fighting spirit. Though they fought till the end, two of their players, especially the one wearing jersey No. 10 should have earned a red card for a hard tackling and committing unnecessary infringements.

The lesson we derived from the game is not to lose concentration even when leading. A match isn’t won until the referee blows the final whistle. The flying eagles need focus and should strive to fight for the ball whenever they lose possession. The defenders went to sleep thinking the match was over since Nigeria was leading 2-0 and the match was less than 10 minutes to regulation time. Many of us watching the match in Nigeria almost had a heart attack when the Cameroonians leveled up, scoring two quick goals in 6 minutes to regulation time.

Be that as it may, I don’t think the coach should overhaul the team. The World Cup is in two months’ time. Instead, he could bring in (or introduce) three or four good players to beef up the defense and add more bite to the attack.

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN AND WISHING THE TEAM SUCCESS AT THE UNDER 20 WORLD CUP!

kepler: 2011-05-02 00:23

@ smoke. I think some of the Nigerian players had MRI scan two years ago, when they featured at the U 17 championship in Nigeria. Again Siasia is going for Nigerians abroad whose ages are verified to be true and correct. So in all these, i believe that very soon we will have genuine players whose ages cant be doubted. In the meantime, lets make do with what we have right now.

ALL AFRICA GAMES QUALIFIERS:
Nigeria will face Ghana during June and July for a place at the September All-Africa Games in Mozambique where football and athletics are expected to be the main attractions at the quadrennial 'African Olympics'.

Nigeria and South Africa have cruised into the final qualifying round for the 2011 All-Africa Games football tournament. Nigeria defeated Liberia 6:1 in Benin, while South Africa though lost 2-1 away to Malawi after conceding a late goal, but were comfortable aggregate winners having taken a three-goal lead in the first leg.

Nigeria dedicates victory to new President
http://www.cafonline.com/competition/can-u-20_2011/news/9409-nigeria-dedicates-victory-to-new-president.html

Thank God for the wise decision of the Flying Eagles to dedicate the Cup to the living President of the country and not to a dead person. At last the diabolic wisdom and mundane belief of some KON Commentators was not followed.

John Obuh was asked this question by CAFonline: To whom do you dedicate today’s victory?

The wise coach who has more experience in life than some jolly-jolly wannabes had this to say,
JO: To our newly elected President. Goodluck Jonathan the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria.

Thank God the victory was not dedicated to the dead. This is a victory for the living!

Finally, I rest my case.....

@To Hell With Ghana, I was the first person in this forum that suggested that they dedicate their victory to Adefemi Olubayo. You suggested otherwise. I do not have problems with that since everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But your recent comments does not in anyway show any respect to the fallen hero. You sounded a bit disrespectful. Remember that Olubayo has left some people behind and we should be circumspect when we make certain statements. I urge that you don't comment further on this issue. Enough is Enough !!! Thanks.

I did not mention the any name in my write-up not even the coach or president's names! Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and beliefs. I made a case of what I believe in the the team has deemed it right to choose who they dedicate their victory to.

So when you say I disrespected the guy who has passed-on, I do not understand. Did I insult him, his family or anybody associated with him? "NO".

It is natural that different people have different opinions.

Please lets show some appreciation to john Obuh who went to the tourney with short of players due to age related issues but still came out champion. Not all coach can achieve such feat.

I heard some body mention that Sani Emmanuel should apologise to obuh to be recall back to the team for the word cup.
I support that motion, sani Emmanuel will perform wonders at the wc if included in the team. I can see the blessings of T.B joshua in that boy.

Pls obuh forgive the lad and recall him back to the squad. I know by now he must have regreted his decision to abadoned to team seeing them lift the trophy. This guy is a machine goal scorer. Pls obuh forgive and forget.

@ Boa & jeff

Of course I can't 'cause my facts are not straight but my point still stands. If both of you don't think so then tell me why our beloveth country owns the world in the junior category (particularly U-17) and can't ever seem to find their footing in the seniors?

You might have succeeded in pocking holes in my comment but the point still remains. Nigeria should have been a powerhouse of soccer today had it been that they really treated the U-17 and U-20 for what it is designed for and not completely a stage for soccer glory by fielding in overaged players.

More than half of the Nigerian U-17 squad failed a test that determines age accuracy in 2009 and if it wasn't for it, it would have been business as usual without an ounce of conscience to upholding the sport's intergrety.

Samson Siasia is doing what he can to change all that with real young boys locally and overseas to build a young senior team. U-17 and 20 is just a tournement held to hopefully find young talents. The senior team has always been the priority.

@daddy pato, thanks for the video. KON is a sports library not because of the news posted in the site but for the informed forumites. Uchebo was the actual star in the victory with his powerful run. I had never seen him play before watching this video and again the first goal was dedicated to the memory of Michael's late father (@to hell with Ghana)
I know that people cannot have the same views everytime, it is time for people that are not convinced that the new coaches are responsible for the recent rise in our soccer to have a rethink. I have seen a lot of comment with Amodu and Siasia, though often from jokers. Amodu was given the chance but he blew it. He continually stated that he was not willing to change anything even after exiting the nations cup. The players were so relaxed because they knew that they have guaranteed shirts. ****tu was rarely making the team in Bolton but he did not seek a move, etc. You may say what hand has Siasia in the recent rise. Just wait a little. Have you taken time to read the interview of these players? I have heard statement like "I have heard that Siasia is a good coach who likes working with young players and he will give you chance as long as you are good". Who can deny this? Many of these players have been constantly referred to as Siasia boys but in the real sense of it, he does not have a permanent shirt for any player. Let's consider the right back position for instance: I cannot remember the name of the stocky player who started in that position, he lost his position when Olubayo (rip) came into the scene and Olubayo was almost losing his place to Chibuzor before his sudden death. That is creating a sort of competition. The players know that their places are not guaranteed. What of the love shown to the players like the constant visit even when they are injured? the phone calls when we are not even aware. Gone are the days when our coaches only visit England. We now have coaches who see themselves as responsible for the youth teams because they believe that the success of the youth team will reflect on the Super Eagles. Recently, players that are young and may have to start from the junior teams are being unearthed.
I am not Siasia's PR but it is sickening seeing people come into the forum and churning out statistics that are not real to discredit the coaches who are doing their best and the results have not been bad so far even if we have not faced the Arg or Spa of this world. I can only sit in my closet and pray that may God reward the hardwork of Siasia and his coaching team

Segun: 2011-05-02 08:53

I am just tired of hearing this age cheat issue. I heard that Amaesiamaka is raising another dust about the age of Ajagun. Ajagun was in the U17 team but he focused on Chukwudi then who has eventually been dropped. Is he on a mission to discredit the work of others especially when they seem to have made one success? Why now when they just won? Do not get me wrong. He may be made the police to verify ages but there are ways to do it. All these guys are friends to people in authority. Forget about the bashing on the pages of newspapers. Why can he not have a frank talk with the NFF technical team or chairman about this age issue instead of constantly coming to the pages of newspaper to ridicule the country? We have been complaining since time immemorial and we are still complaining now. Can we not change strategy? Instead of seeking to be a star, it is time for Odegbami, Amaesiamaka, Akpoborie to now come together, map out a strategy based on their observation and discuss with people at the helm of affairs (we do not have to know about this, the way matters are handled determine the result).
Reading through the comments, I saw many recommending overhaul, dropping of goalkeepers, etc. I laugh because we are the same set that complain that youth tourneys are not for us to win at all cost yet we want a total transformation in two months. Dami may be short and not perfect but are we expecting a perfect goalkeeper in this age grade tournament. We have to believe in our coaches else we may not allow these players to realize their true potential. Let's look at Enyeama, he is also short. He was bad at handling crosses, always being removed when penalty looms but we must give credit to Onigbinde for believing in him. Today, he is one of the world's best. Most of us were not convinced then (including myself) about his chance to make it in the big stage. We must be careful on how we put pressure on the players and coaches.
Despite the fact that people on ground in South Africa claim that Nigerians, South Africans and Egyptians look the youngest in the tourney, many are still not convinced. Aneke was bred in England so he is probably not cheating. What is the difference in the size of Aneke and Ramon Azeez? What of Joel Obi who grew up in Italy? He is even more physically built than most of the players in the U20 team. What is my point here? You cannot always make conclusion based on size alone. These are sportsmen and they are expected to build their physique.
We must not always encourage our players to disrespect their coaches. Obuh may be stubborn and have his shortcoming but one thing you cannot take away from him is that he is somehow discipline. How can a player leave camp on the eve of a tournament that can transform his career to sign a contract and you expect the coach to pick him (that is the case of Omeoruo who signed for Standard Liege just before the tournament). Someone even suggested that he may be jealous of Sani Emmanuel's success else the reason for leaving him out. Sani's success? That amazes me. The truth of the matter is that our players are always in a rush to sign contract that keeps them perpetually in the youth team of these foreign teams. On a number of occasions, they have suffered dip in form. I support leaving out of Sani and Onazi if the coaches were not really involved in their moves to Lazio. This team has been in camp for a long time, do we expect players in camp to be dropped for some stars from Lazio when the latter were busy penning deals during prep.
We can always praise others while we are harsh on our own. Obuh made mistake, bla bla bla. The Cameroonians were favorite before the final. Why did Cam concede two goals in quick succession? If Cam can do so, why can we not? Even the best professional teams in the world do so and they train everyday. Why not hail the coach that his substitution also led to the winning goal. We have to be fair on these coaches. It is not easy to be on the hot seat.
To round everything off, it is good to criticize but it must be constructive. I rest my case.

West Brom's in-form striker Peter Odemwingie has revealed a sports psychologist has helped bring out the best of his ability.

The Baggies ace has been one of the finds of the season after joining from Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow on a two-year deal last August.

Odemwingie netted his 14th goal of the campaign in Saturday's win over Aston Villa, his fourth in four consecutive games for the club.

However, the Nigerian often dwelled on misses in the past and it was only after seeing a psychologist who convinced him to adopt the attributes of a cheetah that he was able to lose his fear factor.

"The psychologist showed me an image of a running cheetah," explained Odemwingie.

"He said that when I run, he sees that in me; that I change direction and I'm quick. The thing is that cheetahs have the belief in their speed and quality to catch [their prey].

"That means when they lose one they're not scared because they're going to get the next one. He said 'put that in your mind and don't be too worried about a lost chance'.

"He was trying to make me forget about missed chances and bring out the instinct. He said I was a player who does better using instinct, playing naturally, than by thinking.

"That week I had a chance to seal the game and I missed, but in the next match I scored a last-minute winner against Blackpool."

Sarah.: 2011-05-02 12:24

But i think ODIMWINGIE IS RUN like a RABBIT or ***** CAT.

AYC: Amiesimaka blasts again, says Nigeria still cheats
As the Flying Eagles get set to lock horns with Cameroon in the final of the African Youth Championship in Johannesburg today, former Chairman of Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt, Adokiye Amiesimaka, says Nigeria is still using over-aged players to prosecute age-grade competitions.
The former Green Eagles winger said he believes that all the players paraded by coach John Obuh are above 20 years and are therefore not supposed to take part in the competition, adding that it was regrettable that despite the expose he made in 2009 during the U-17 World Cup, the NFA has not learnt anything.
“The process for 2011 elections has been highly commended for being very credible. There have been a dramatic turn around for the better, now we are getting there in politics but we are not getting there in sports. What do I mean? I’m saying that in politics, it used to be very bad, talking about rigging and all that. In football it has been very bad and it is still very bad.
This is 2011, why do we keep deceiving ourselves. Stanley Okoro, for instance, has no business in that team which every body knows, he cannot be any thing less than 33 or 34. Olarenwaju Kayode was also my player in the Sharks feeder team in 2002, he played alongside Fortune Chuwkudi, both of them were mates, he too cannot be less than 29 or 30. Abdul Ajagun was one of the highest goal scorers in the league. He was also in Command Secondary School in Kaduna or so, he dropped out of school in SSS2 in the 1990s and so cannot be U-20.
They have no business in that team, so why are we rejoicing and celebrating. We are not helping ourselves and our football, we are just cheating and ridiculing ourselves and then making nonsense of the whole thing. Even if other countries are cheating, let them cheat because of their ignorance, we know better than them.
Age grade teams are meant to help us develop a serious senior national team but we are not doing that. I passed through the age grade level, I played for my secondary school, played for the Lagos team in the National Sport Festival, I played for the national academical team, I played for the University and the senior national team. I went through a process and that is how it should be, that is the truth.
By Adokiye Amiesimaka

You have heard it from an authority in the game, age cheats will always be a problem in cadet football in Africa ........I don’t believe Nigeria is the only culprit Ghana is equally guilty, remember Odatey Lamptey of Ghana U17 in the ‘90s and how his career got messed up due to age cheats. etc, Cameroun is not innocent of age cheats as well. The likes of Kanu, Oruma, Babayaro and others in the U17 1993 set might be innocent but the age cheats in their set fizzled out of the game quickly only the genuine ones like the names I mentioned above only lasted the test of time. Let's work out a simple calculation, if Kanu was 30 in 1993, he would have fizzled out fast enough that means by now he would have been 48 yrs by now (which cannot be) likewise the likes of Oruma or Babayaro, of course others in the same set like Karibu Ojigwe fizzled out, but then destiny comes in, we are not all destined to arrive at the same destination, fingers are not equal. Point is that Are we really sure these guys lied? Does Amesimaka know what he is talking about? This is a big debate which will linger on for a long time

WHAT IS THE WAY OUT GUYS?

@Segun, i cant ignore the urge to sign in and say thank you for that wonderful piece, some of us including is ROYAL HOLINESS Amiesimaka live in glass house but are quick to throw stones forgetting that by so doing they are creating storms in their own life

for several times i keep asking is it only in football that cheating exist? in our day to day lives how many times have we cheated on strangers, neighbors, friends, family and nation, unless if the aforementioned never really matters

Judge no one so that ye shall not be judged for the measure we use to judge others same shall be use upon us. thus says the lord of host
.........................................................

It is indeed disgusting "for lack of a better words" to know that so many things are happening in the world of sports in and outside Nigeria yet little is been reported here in KON, not even a picture of our FE with their champions cup in on display in KON simply
pathetic if you ask me

Manebay: 2011-05-02 15:26

@Segun; Tell them my brother. Abeg tell them. There are too much of Witches and Wizards in Nigeria waiting to destroy every success that we achieve. When the Ghana U-20 team won the same cup, nobody talked about age issues. Now, it is Nigeria, and age issues are coming up.

Great Nigerians, i lost commenting on this forum some 5 years ago. The AYC brought me back as i search Nigerian newspaper who may give a befitting ****ysis of this sweet victory. Kudos , kickoff. i am returning for good.
In sports especially football, there is always rooms for improvement. Someone struck the right chord when he stated .... that if Cameroon could concede two quick goals why not Nigeria. That was a signature ****ysis , that you do not take things for granted. It is a continuous battle. it is never over until the referee blows the last whistle.

Anyway, in far away Toronto, i and my family remain most excited as we show off the Nigeria teams feat to my son soccer team mates of how strong and skillful Nigerians could be. Congratulations guys.

@Smoke
You’ll never convince me. You are just as bad and guilty as those you’re accusing. You admitted lying to support the argument you’re trying to make, and you want us to support that. You are dishonest yourself.

The problem with African teams at the senior level is poor planning and management, not age.
For e.g., we had a wonderful U-17 team that won the WC with Yemi Tella in S Korea. We failed to manage, train, and nurture them for the transition to the upper level teams and eventually to the senior national team. This is a result of poor planning and has nothing to do with age. Only H. Lukeman, R. Ibrahim, and K. Udoh who barely made it out of the group; after B Vogt was pressured to invite some of them. We lost stars like K. Akinsola, G. Oseni (back now with Coach Obuh, thank God), M. Krisantus, etc. Amodu would not invite any of them preferring to rely on the old brigade. That’s what’s killing our senior teams.
Thank God our new breed of coaches and the present NFF are doing things better than the previous groups.

Even the great Pele (and many other great football minds), have consistently stated that the problem with Africa is their poor management. “With the talent Africa has, they would almost win everything if they could only be better organized”.
My personal opinion, in addition to the above, is that Africans get carried away too easily with little successes. They quickly loose their focus. They are very individualistic and seek personal accolades rather than focusing on the collective success. One person can go far, but together we can go farther.

Please don’t bring me your nonsense explanation. You cant lie to support your argument and expect us to just “understand” and accept it.

mamamia78: 2011-05-02 17:13

Age cheat is common in Africa as a whole. i am a Nigerian, i live in Italy, i reduced my age so that i can get a good job in the factory, So also my Ghanaian, Senegalese,Ivorian and lot of Africa friends did. So, in one way or the other we all cheat.

THIS IS STORY THAT SHOWS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PRAYER & A DEDICATION.

AHMED MUSA DEDICATES GOALS TO FLYING EAGLES TEAM MATES

VVV Venlo of Holland forward, Ahmed Musa has dedicated his double strike which helped his side to a 3-2 win over Feyenoord at the weekend to members of the victorious Flying Eagles squad that clinched the 17th edition of the Africa Youth Championship in South Africa.

Musa told brilafm.net that he always had his mind n South Africa and when he netted his second goal, he immediately said to himself it was for the team.

“I really dedicate the goals to my Flying Eagles team mates and to the coach, though I was physically absent from the team, my spirit was with them all through. It’s a double celebration for me because our win against Feyenoord has really helped the cause of our relegation battle”, he stated.

Musa, 18, was included on the Flying Eagles’ team list to the competition just concluded in South Africa but could only feature in the team’s opening fixture against Ghana as his Dutch team required his services in the battle against relegation.
