Santos beat Golden Arrows

Santos beat Golden Arrows 4-3 in a League match on Saturday night.

Tyren Arendse scored the decisive goal in the second half after strikes from Collins Mbesuma, Mxolisi Machupu, Philani Shange (for Arrows), Salmaan King and Erwin Isaacs (for Santos) had left the game at 3-3.

The home side got off to a flying start with two quick goals in the first ten minutes of play. Mbesuma showed why he is such a highly regarded striker with a well taken goal from the edge of the Santos penalty area in the seventh minute. Machupu and Philani Shange combined well in midfield to set up the chance for the burly goal poacher.

Arrows played with the fast flowing football they have become renowned over the years. A quick break from a defensive situation saw them in the opposition’s danger, where Mbesuma picked out the run of Machupu with a clever pass.

The lanky midfielder slammed the ball home from close range with Santos keeper Ryan Harrison who replaced Lee Langeveldt in the starting line-up near kickoff, well beaten.

Santos looked a rattled side and was in serious danger of falling further behind as the home side piled on the pressure. But the Peoples Team withstood the Arrows onslaught and reduced the deficit, against the run of play in the 33rd minute.

King netted with a easy tap in when Arrows keeper Thulasizwe Khuzwayo palmed the ball into the path of midfielder, while trying to keep out a miscued Siyabonga Sangweni header.

Five minutes before the interval the teams were level pegging when Isaacs slammed home a stunning strike from the right flank.

But the home side hit the front once more when Machupu broke clear from the Santos defence and hit a low shot which Harrison blocked. Shange who was following up, guided the ball into the empty goal.

Ten minutes later, Santos’ never say die attitude came to the fore when they restored parity. King sent an accurate cross into the Arrows penalty area which Isaacs headed on target.
