Swallows get crucial win at Stars

It’s been a long time coming, but Moroka Swallows have finally escaped the bottom two of the Absa Premiership after a 3-1 win against Free State Stars at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
Swallows opened the scoring from Siyabonga Nomvethe’s well taken penalty after Paulos Masehe handled the ball inside the box in the sixth minute.
However, Stars continued to trouble Swallows’ defence, and their efforts finally paid off when Shere Lekgothoane tackled Manti Moholo from behind inside the area and referee Jerome Damon awarded the second spot-kick of the day, which Kennedy Mweene converted to level matters in the 36th minute.
Stars started the second half the more determined side and Madoda Motha nearly increased their tally in the 48th minute, but his shot went wide.
In reality, Stars should have buried Swallows in a goal-glut, but the likes of Motha, Manti Moholo and Boitumelo Sekgobela had an off-day in front of goal.
In an attempt to get that important second goal, Gordon Igesund replaced Oscar Machapa, Cisse Chieka, and Macbeth Sibaya with Keegan Ritchie, Bradley Ritson and Ashraf Hendricks, and the three substitutes proved the difference.
Hendricks gave the Birds the lead on 73 minutes when he headed home Keegan Ritchie’s corner, before Bradley Ritson grabbed the third that put the match beyond doubt in the 78th minute.
