Bloemfontein Celtic secured a top five finish in the Absa Premiership after they whipped Bidvest Wits 4-1 at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was a great display of football by Celtic in the opening 45 minutes, which saw them score three goals in clinical fashion and take the game beyond the reach of Wits.
Celtic got off to the best possible start after scoring the opening goal in the ninth minute.
A cleverly run from Lennox Baclea saw him break the Students’ off-side trap before supplying a pass to Siphelele Mthembu, who made no mistake with the finish.
Celtic have been good in defence all season, but they have lacked prowess in their attack. That was certainly not the case today as they found their second goal in the 35th minute.
This time it was the turn of Danny Venter to attack down the right before providing a pin-point pass to Mthembu, yet again unmarked inside the box. On this occasion the striker had a bit more to do, but still he powerfully drove the ball home from12 yards out.
Five minutes later and Celtic found their third goal. A quick passing movement saw them find some space down the left and work their way into the box where Clifford Mulenga let loose with 16 yard shot, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Darren Keet. However, Venter was on hand to slot the rebound.
The visitors had their fourth in the 60th minute - in a quick counter-attack, Celtic broke down the left and as the cross came into the box, Derrick Spencer turned the ball into the back of his own net.
Wits did find some consolation in the 72nd minute when the referee awarded them a penalty after he adjudged Thabo Nthethe to have pulled down Sifiso Vilakazi inside the box. Vilakazi took the penalty himself and made no mistake, but it proved nothing more than a consolation as Celtic secured the easy win.
