Nigeria reach AYC Final

Nigeria beat Mali in the African Youth Championship

Posted: 28 April 2011 Time: 2:17 pm

Nigeria's Under-20 team restored some of their diminished swagger in a controlling performance as they beat Mali 2-0 to reach the Final of the African Youth Championship.

Uche Nwofor bagged his third goal of the tournament in the first half, and Stanley Okoro claimed his second with a penalty on the stroke of full time, after Kayode Olanrewaju was felled in the box.

A grim performance, littered with stray passing, ended in a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their second group game of the campaign.

A 2-0 defeat of Gambia sealed qualification without being convincing, but the same cannot be said of the semifinal triumph over Group A winners Mali.

The Flying Eagles never looked in danger of conceding from the Malians, who only mustered one effort in target in 90 minutes.

And when Nwofor tapped in from close range after just 22 minutes, the encounter looked done and dusted. Nwofor could have added a second with the last kick of the half, but was denied by goalkeeper Sy's exceptional save.

Mali hugged possession in the second period, but found the Nigeria defence unyielding.

Their fate was finally sealed when Olanrewaju forced his way into the box, to be scythes down by the desperate Diallo.

Okoro, on as an 89th minute substitute, had had enough of a feel for the ball to stroke it confidently past Sy.

The Nigerians will now await the winners of the second semifinal between Cameroon and Egypt.

well done boys! We can win the cup and we will. Please win it for Olubayo Adefemi.
I would have loved to see a match between these physical Malians against the Camerounians. Anyway, it is not too late as both teams might slug it out in the third place if Cameroun fails to win Egypt. Once again, well done John Obuh and his lads.

This is a world class performance by Nigeria. I watched everybit of it. With this type of perfomance give us Cameroun or Egypt and Nigeria will still triumph I don't fear any team. Ahmed Musa was NOT missed at all that's what I call a good coach, good coaching acumen, well done John Obuh.

Best perfomance so far from the Flying Eagles. This team will go places with this perfomance. Every department of the team played well from defence to midfield to attack. This team will beat Cameroun silly! I am proud to be a Nigerian. Where are the Ghanaians?

I do not want to sound or appear pessimistic, but if you did watch that match, you will pause before congratulating this team. It reminded me the same team that Nigeria took to Canada in 2007. A lot need to be done before the WYC in central America.

these boys are certainly not Under-20. if they want disgrace and real challenge, they should play USA under-20. Stanley Okoro that i know personally is 26years old.

For the first time we played very well but we could have beaten Mali 4-0 with young boys not with this over-aged 'PAPAS'

Although there is still much work to be done.

Is this not the same Mali that drubbed South Africa 4-2

Win the cup for PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN! The man who is striving hard to bring dignity to the country.

I read someone said you should win it for Olufemi Adebayo. While I sympathies with his family, I do not the best way to motivate our players is for them to play for the dead. Olufemi Adebayo is dead so live with it. Like its said, "THE BEST THE LIVING CAN DO FOR THE DEAD IS TO KEEP ON LIVING".

So, please play for your lives like never before and win it for our darling president and every other Nigerian living!

@Noel,yeeeeeeeee you finish that "dumbass". That is the best answer I ever heard anybody could give to the "houseboy" and "Billion?. Menn I called that knockout blow. If both of them still have anything left in their skull, they should use it to keep silent for EVER.

Up boys, well done. You have made us all proud.
