Nigeria drop suspected age cheats

Posted: 2011-04-17 12:01

Nigeria will play the African Youth Championships two players short after Mackson Ojobo and Gomo Onduku were excluded from the squad for 'technical reasons'.

Team officials in South Africa claim that Ojobo was given special permission to play for Enyimba in this weekend's CAF Champions League match. But another official said he is not expected to join the team even after that.

Both players were named in John Obuh's final squad for the tournament, but reports emerged immediately after suggesting that the pair could not be within the age bracket.

Worried about the reports, the NFF moved quickly to remove the players from the squad.

NFF officials however, declined to explain what the 'technical reasons' are, although a top official at the secretariat told KickOffNigeria.com that it was for the same reason that former captain Fortune Chukwudi was also left out of the squad.

Nigeria begin their campaign on Monday against defending World and African champions Ghana.

Interesting, so finally NFF has the guts to something right, bt the question is why wait for the dying minutes...shldnt they hv verified their ages from the onset? Even our U23 team is riddled with overage players, they shld go and weed off all them players above the age bracket! Js sorri for the coach who has to play with 2 men down from d start..wat a shame and lack of planning from our pple as usual..

nicesung: 2011-04-17 12:25

i must say good work from the NFF!! bravo!! Mr obuh make sure you sink Ghana no matter what!!! if its take hand to score the goals ask your boys to do it!!!!

nicesung: 2011-04-17 12:27

But why take you so long to weed them out????

parkheaven: 2011-04-17 12:53

good move but i think it should have come earlier before the announce of the final squad, now we are short of 2 players and i think that there is still another one CHIDI OSUCHUKWU his data all over internet shows he is 21years so obuh should be cautious.

John Obu is a CHEAT

BATAN: 2011-04-17 13:48

THOSE TWO WERE SENT HOME BECAUSE THEIR AGES COULD BE VERIFIED AS THERE ARE DOCUMENTED EVIDENCES AGAINST THEM.MOST OF THE PLAYERS IN THAT TEAM ARE OVER 30YRS OF AGE! IF THE NFF WAS THAT SINCERE IT SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT PLAYERS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYING THE NPL FOR SEVERAL YEARS CANNOT BE UNDER 20YRS OF AGE. PHILEMON DANIEL, FOR INSTANCE,HAS BEEN PLAYING THE LEAGUE SINCE 2001 AND I WATCHED HIM PLAY FOR TORNADOES AGAINST NPA LAGOS IN 2003 AT THE ONIKAN STADIUM, SO HOW COULD HE STILL BE U20 IN 2011?

I STRONGLY BELIEVE JOHN OBUH HIMSELF IS A BIG CHEAT THAT IS DESPERATE TO WIN! HE KNOWS THE LOCAL LEAGUE VERY WELL AND SOME OF THOSE GUYS PLAYED UNDER HIM OR AGAINST HIS TEAM IN THE NPL! HIS U17 TEAM IS ABOUT THE OLDEST, IN TRUE AGE, EVER ASSEMLED IN NIGERIA. HE CAN'T CLAIMED IGNORANCE AND PLS HE SHOULD NOT GIVE US THAT CRAB OF NOT BEING ABLE TO ASCERTAIN THEIR AGES WITH THE EXCUSE THAT ONLY THEIR PARENTS CAN CONFIRM THEIR AGES.

SUYA: 2011-04-17 15:06

@Batan.
I agree with you 100%. Obuh is part of the problem. He knows the local league.Another one is Eguavon, who is too lazy to scout for young talents.

guys lets not think too much about the over age sagga but lets just thank God the right thing have been done before caf suspends Nigeria from the tournamnet and lets just pray for the boys that they do not get affected in mondays match so that we can get our three points against our old foes Ghana and just move on because i know the 19 players still in south africa can bring glory to the nation.so lets just forget about what happened and remain focused on our opening match against ghana.

charlyboy: 2011-04-17 19:11

lets just pray for the team to get through to the world cup and then we can remove age cheats before the world cup begins in columbia in june

Mali defeat South Africa in Africa Youth opener

Mali defeated South Africa in the opener of the Africa U20 Championship

Mali got off to a good start at the Africa Youth Championship (AYC) when beating hosts South Africa 4-2 in the opening game of the tournament on Sunday.

France-based striker Abdoulaye Coulibaly scored twice to help the Young Eagles to the Group A victory in Johannesburg.

Mali passed the ball with much more purpose than their opponents and deservedly took the lead on 12 minutes thanks to Cheick Mohamed Cherif Doumbia's trademark thunderbolt.

The Libya-based midfielder picked his spot from 30 yards and let fly from the distance which left South Africa goalkeeper Tawfeeq Salie sprawling.

The goal resulted in a response from Amajita who equalised in the 20th minute with Lucky Nguzana scoring from a very tight angle.

But Mali restored their lead two minutes later through a swift counter-attack as Coulibaly powered in a shot from the edge of the box.

The Paris St. Germain attacker scored his second after rounding Salie through another counter-attack after the South African defence lost concentration.

The South Africa goalkeeper failed to gather a hopeful free-kick in the 67th minute and Ibrahim Diallo pounced to make it 4-1.

But the home side fought back and restored some hope when Nguzana connected Jabulani Ncubeni's cross with a volley that beat goalkeeper Cheick Sy.

Meanwhile, Egypt defeated Lesotho 2-0 in the other Group A game in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The Young Pharaohs took the lead in just after the break with a strike from Ahmed Hegazi.

The north Africans sealed the win after Mohamed Ghaly converted a 63rd minute penalty.

Mali will be hoping to beat Egypt in their next game on Wednesday to keep alive their hopes of reaching the last four.

South Africa will revive their chances if they win their next group game with Lesotho in Wednesday's other game.

The four semi-finalists of the tournament will qualify for the Under-20 World Cup takes place in Colombia in July and August this year.

Obuh is cheating. He cheated in the U-17 and because there was no scrutiny he got away with it. This time I must warn you people (especially the journalists at KoC who knew all of this already), that our friends in Ghana are ready to REPORT Nigeria to FIFA.

Furthermore the BLOG Article that sparked this will be picked up by the international press but they are waiting for the tournament to start ... Nigeria will be banned, because a few more suspect players (obviously so) are in that team. Obuh is a liability and Nigeria SHOULD overall the entire U-20 team ...

Papa Eagus don talk!

Grooming over aged players has been the key reason why there has been few or no quality players from Nigeria playing professionally in Europe or anywhere else.

When you build up a player who is 30 years old but should be between 17 and 20, the player would not have the proper fitness by the time his skill has matured.

The Nigerian mentality is seek junior world cup glory by all means (to include cheating)and then pay the price years later with zero quality professional players and a senior team (Super Eagles)that can't keep up with fellow African countries let alone Europe and South America.

Some are on a world campaign here. It seems they’re trying to convince earth that they are the most honest people in it. But fact is, as much as some people here try to profess and convince themselves and the world about their own (so called) honesty, they inadvertently (or not) disgrace their county.
Some Nigerians have (over the years) condemned and damaged themselves and our reputation so much that no matter what the NFF does- even if they field a verifiable U-15 team in an U-20 tournament, the world which you are trying to convince with your claim of honesty will still have the belief that Nigeria cheated (win or not). This is simple psychology (101).

One sad thing about ignorance is that its very difficult to “see” the things that you are ignorant about.
I’m of the absolute conviction that most people who post here are illogical and uncivilized.

As long as you continue to tell the world that you are cheats, with these destructive posts about yourselves, you will always be seen as cheats, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. EVEN IF YOU REPENT AND SHOW YOUR HONESTY IN BLOOD. YOU WILL NEVER EMANCIPATE YOURSELVES FROM YOUR OWN DESTRUCTIVENESS.

I often wonder what makes some of you people think that you’re more honest than the NFF. (Self-righteous?). In fact, I trust the NFF more that any of you. The NFF is careful and knows that they are a public entity and all their actions can be seen by everybody, while you truth tellers can’t say that about your own selves.

@BULLY God bless you for that piece. I was ashamed reading all these myopic and unintellegent comments made by some forumite. Instead of the busy bodies to pray nigeria perform well in the absence of those players, rather they prefered to be making senseles camplains and making nigeria look as if We are the only guilty party. I challenge them to name any african country in this championship that is not guity of age cheat. Saints indeed! Make person hear word jare.

@BULLY,good talk my borther and God bless you. i just want to add to what you just said. what make them think other countries coming to this tournament are not coming with over-age players, including south africa? what makes them think FIFA did not know some countries parades over-age players in aged organized tournament[ they only ban countries that paraded too much over age players or too too old players]?

apart from europe and north american countries, tell me which countries does not brings overage players including south america countries and asia to FIFA tournament?

Let someone swear with his or her life[God should punish his or her generation forever] if Ghana team that won last under 20 did not have atleast 3 players that are more than 25 years at that time?

If anybody believe cheating is only been done by nigerians, welcome to my world. it is like saying, corruption is only taking place in nigeria or there is no air in other countries.

The word.: 2011-04-18 05:22

im not supporting cheating. as a matter of fact, i hate been cheated. im loosing interest in aged tournament myself because of type of players come countries bring to these tournament[forget the fact that those players were well fed and that stuff]. but we can not single out nigeria. AND i will never ridicule my country [on this topic]in public because of this. NFF have done the right thing by removing these "questioned' players, which i think any reasonable FA in any country will do. What else do you want?

forget it if you are blue fans [chelsea], do they want to tell me RAMIRES is truly 23 yrs old? pulse and zoom is face and say the truth.

Frank: 2011-04-18 07:45

@Bully God bless u, I never stop wondering why Nigerians are like dis, why do we hate ourself, why do we keep on killing our image, what do we gain from all this ****.How many countries have u seen doing this to their own self, or do we think its only Nigerians that use over age players? oh, God help dis country, I wonder if we will ever get better.

Segun: 2011-04-18 09:53

@Bully, bravo: cheating is bad but we cannot continue hurting our image. Everybody will see an average Nigerian as cheat.
@all, I will urge us to be civil in our comments today as we faced the Ghanaians. I was surprised to see the news of Nigeria dropping suspected overaged players in a Ghanaian sports site (not kickoff but a widely followed Ghanaian site) without a single comment. We should not be the ones to steer up character assassination today. It is just one match and the outcome of today's match will not determine who wins the AYC. I have said my own.

Why won't you guys say I am negative when people support the kind of nonsense advanced here BULLY's last post?! Unbelievable!

In the nations that are moving forward today even if the president misbehaves it is an issue that becomes a global affair. Like the Bill Clinton scandal. What the Americans disgraced themselves? they should have kept it under wraps? America is such a shameful country???

The truth must be upheld at every point - IN PUBLIC SPACE - because it shapes our society, our children and the way people see us. You can't say we should understand cheating in football and not cheating in Abuja, can you?

But if we were not 'uncivilised' and 'ignorant' like BULLY has branded those who abhor cheating - and has found remarkable support from us God fearing Nigerians, we will find that cheating only ends up messing up our game.

Otherwise we would have dominated the Nations Cup as we dominate the U-17 and U-20s. Small ideas keep you from the really big idea.

Please read SMOKE's contribution again.

Now nobody believes Nigerian players ever declare their real ages - and the innocent ones among them have to suffer the shame brought on by 'emotional and decadent reasoning' like Bully's.

we are just fooling ourselves not FiFa. For those of you who care to listen, listen to this facts: 6 members of the spain u-17 team in 2007 of which nigeria won, graduated to the the senior team who eventually became the world champion. in our own case, only Haruna made it to the senior team possibly due to absence of Mikel Obi. On the other hand, five members of their German counterpart also graduated to the senior as well as making a cardinal impart during the world cup. Following Ghana gallant step, we have to start discovering new blood not recurring Old Men.

@Teebus, I do not think Bully is supporting age cheating but what we are trying to say is that all these statements we make online tend to haunt us as Nigerians later in various countries we found ourselves. I have never altered my age before for instance, but how would I feel if someone label me as age cheat because of all these comments that are all over the internet. The best we can do is to get NFF to reason why it is important to use players of right age. But are we doing it the right way? I do not know. What happens if a coach sometimes in future field players of right age? Some will still come out and criticize. You cannot base a player's age on how built he is because sport men generally do all these body building exercise but that is what most people have done in the past.
I hope NFF can be serious about the fight against the scourge so that we can limit our discussion to soccer matters and not age cheating everytime.

Segun: 2011-04-18 11:00

@OkonHouseBoy, you may be right with your statistics but players did not graduate in the Nigerian team because we recall old men. To the best of my knowledge, even if the players are overage as people claim, we always have new faces at every underage tourney. Players do not graduate because our past coaches do not give them the chance. Amodu reluctantly allowed some players from the Olympic team into the Super Eagles because he wanted to rely on players he already know. What of the influence of football agents who do not allow the players to mature enough before shipping them to Europe? Examples abound everywhere: the Chrisantus, Sani Emmanuel, Onazi, etc. Sani and Onazi should be in this team but for their crave to move to Europe early and the AYC and WYC would have helped their careers better. You have to prove yourself in the big stage before the European clubs can respect you. If they do not get the chance in the main team soon, they start losing form and the confidence reduce to the lowest ebb.
Age cheating may be rampant in Africa but it is not the only reason why we do not see players coming through.

Chibuzz: 2011-04-18 13:53

@Segun u are a big disgrace to your generation for trying to decieve the public with your unconfirmed statistics on this forum. Thumbs up for you @ Okonhouseboy and Jeff for the statistics provided.
In a country of more than 150 million Nigerians you are asking how come we keep on changing team now and then. I don`t know if you watch Nigerian league at all and see the array of young stars itching to get their chance to play for their father land. infact mchweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew 4 u! u are a big disgrace to your father land.

Chibuzz: 2011-04-18 14:01

@ segun u claim you have not cheated in ur age and u don`t support cheating good talk. Ask your self this question and tell your self the truth is there no way u have cheated in your life time apart from age? Yes no body likes cheating including myself but the fact still remain we have a resposibility to uphold the truth if we are sincerely honest with our selves. Cheat! Cheat! Cheat! abounds every where in the world not only in Nija or Africa so be guided and stop making Nigerians in Diaspora being looked upon as cheats always. We still have credible and sicere Nigerians all over the globe.
I still repeat mcheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew 4 u!

Segun: 2011-04-18 22:42

@Chibuzz, why can't you take your time to read my comment before raining curses. I was only informing OkonHouseBoy to stop labeling Nigerians as cheat. People can have different opinions but it does not warrant to name calling and cursing. I am not a disgrace to my fatherland but you are for not taking time to read comment. Nigerians need a serious reorientation.
