AmaZulu moved into the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over First Division side Carara Kicks at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.
Usuthu’s goals were scored by Ayanda Dlamini and Lehlohonolo Majoro.
AmaZulu started strongly and took the lead in the 15th minute. Ayanda Dlamini broke free down the left of the penalty area before shooting from a tight angle; the ball deflected into the net off the hands of Kicks goalkeeper Khethukuthula Nxumalo.
Rather than disheartening the First Division team, conceding the goal seemed to spark them into life, as they created scoring chances but failed to make them count in the first half.
Usuthu looked disjointed in the second half, but they still came close to adding to their advantage in the 68th minute when substitute Bongani Mbele cracked a low drive just wide of the target with virtually his first touch after coming off the bench.
AmaZulu were reduced to ten-men with just under a quarter of an hour to play. Hadebe, already on a caution, caught Mosikidi with a late challenge and referee Jerome Damon had no choice but to show a second yellow card and send the AmaZulu defender for an early shower.
Kicks would have hoped to take advantage of their numerical superiority, but Usuthu doubled their lead soon after Hadebe’s dismissal. Tangeni Shipahu drew two defenders to him before handing Lehlohonolo Majoro a shooting opportunity: the dreadlocked striker finished the chance emphatically to make it 2-0 in the 79th minute.
