EXCLUSIVE: Vodacom Challenge details revealed

KickOff.com can reveal the dates, venues and kick-off times for this year’s Vodacom Challenge.

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, as well as English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur, will make up the three-team tournament as revealed by KickOff.com on February 26.

Now a source privy to the preparations of the annual tournament has sent us the full fixtures.

A Johannesburg venue, likely to be the FNB Stadium, will host the final, while the Peter Mokaba Stadium will host the first match. The Soweto Derby, which will be the decider as to who play Spurs in the final, will be hosted by Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Spurs have played in South Africa twice within the last decade. In 2003 they were invited as part of South Africa's World Cup bid campaign. It was from this launch-pad that Mbulelo ‘OJ’ Mabizela won a move to London after impressing then coach Glen Hoddle.

Spurs then returned to play in the 2007 Vodacom Challenge and won the event, beating Orlando Pirates 3-0 in the Final.

Harry Redknapp's current team boasts two Bafana Bafana players in Steven Pienaar and Bongani Khumalo, which will be an added attraction for local fans.

@ mash-do : 2011-04-07 12:21

I agree wit u mashudu,i mean realy now,TP Mazembe can offer beta test dan this mediocre team.its smal team in England n we regard it as special here.

Oje72: 2011-04-07 12:31

I think is time VODACOM stop sponsoring both Chiefs and Pirates at the same time.
it is not doing the rivalry of the two teams any good
As for the RED colour mmmm not gud 4 chiefs
Maybe for PIRATES as they still not sure whether to go with RED or stick to B&W

Aowa..!

Oje72: 2011-04-07 12:38

Fact VODACOM CHALLENGE no longer interesting
They failed CELTICS and they continue to fail all South Africa's soccer lovers
What the the point to have the competition where one team will have advantage of playing the final even if they can lose the first two games?

Bring two GIANTS from AFRICA to compete with CHIEFS & BUCS like B4

As for going RED i think you must sponsor teams that represent your colours and DUMP Chiefs as they don't need you

EL PRINCO: 2011-04-07 12:42

This tournament is boring now...vodacom should go back to invyting top African clubs eg Mazembe and Al Alhy...these English teams dont take it seriously they just field their fringe players then the likes of Chips field their "top" players and win the competition then they think they are special but then fail to atleast make runner up spot in the local league....no more British clubs

Kebsta: 2011-04-07 12:45

haaaai there we go again
another mediocre team sent here
it wont help us at all

lets help bafana by making this an all south african sides
bring all the south african born playas make a team & coached by a local coach

The General - Soccer Dude: 2011-04-07 12:45

I think Vodacom should make this a four-team tournament. Bring on the likes of TP-Mazembe, Ahly haly, ... one team from europe or spain, and the two giants of SAs soccer. That could be exciting. This format that they are using now is weak. The first two games against spurs are useless. Come on Vodacom! do something

S\'javo: 2011-04-07 12:46

f.u.c.k vodacom, why not bring al-ahly and TP Mazembe, because i dont see any challenge here

pk kgags : 2011-04-07 13:02

My two teams playing Spurs nd Chiefs m with the winner Mara K4L

Champ Mriyo (Trebble kings of SA): 2011-04-07 13:03

Ok guys, lets now force vodacom 2 invite beta teams frm Africa n hav a serious competition. We can al sign a partion n kickoff cn foward 2 vodacom n show fans' complaints.Wat do u peeps say?

Champ Mriyo (Trebble kings of SA): 2011-04-07 13:09

Vodacom is only doing this 4 white ppl,it used 2 b African teams n it ws much interestin bt sudenly got this smal european teams.Bucs n Chimps r jus being used 2 kiss n wipe white ppl's a$$

Dikotsi: 2011-04-07 13:10

Remember guys, a certain sector of our population must also be catered for. You will see them on the day of the final. Filling upi the stadiums and shouting for the spurs guys when they dont even know who Letsholonyane is...o tla ba bona.

Oje72: 2011-04-07 13:17

VODACOM,
People have spoken and i hope you are listening
We not saying people must not go to watch the game but don't take supporters for a ride
At first we thought u brought MAN U who was then sponsored by VODAFONE
as part of promoting the brand (VODACOM) who were under the same umbrella and i think they still are because the new logo on VODACOM is the same one that was on VODAFONE logo

Since then you lost it
If you don't come with a better plan U might C empty seats @ the stadiums

kamza : 2011-04-07 13:22

chiefs, pirates, 1 african team & 1oversea team would make the best vodacom challenge!

Truth@@abt@@soccer: 2011-04-07 13:31

Couldn't agree more with the above comments... why go for a weak and unfair round robbing system, whereas we have best footballing teams here in Africa?

There's a change within Vodacom and this is a reason enough to also bring change in its affiliations.

My suggestion is a top 4 tourna structured as follows:
Black, white and red FC
Black, white and Gold FC
One FC from overseas (Should be rotated. i.e Europe, Asia, America etc.)
last, one FC from Africa.

Just image: Pirates vs Barca
Chief vs TP Mazembe

This structure will definitely add more value to our beloved SA giants. Further to this, it'll urge these overseas teams to take this tourna seriously****

no be una fault: 2011-04-07 13:43

@Mriyo, you do have a good point there, i mean wen will we Africans start to appreciate ourselves why must we always in our words, action or inaction's make this white to see us as nobodies, why not invite top sides in Africa to compete with chiefs and pirates. in Europe is there any sponsor that will invite an African club sides to compete in Europe not to talk about given them this stupid kind of leverage of playing two games and no matter the results they will still play in the finals. common Africa wake up is 9am already

Bin Laden: 2011-04-07 13:45

who gives the fk about this cup??? we are the only team in SA to play Barcelona, not only that but a full squad of barcelona...

So now Babboons and Apees can go hang themself together with Blah blah(Now is Red)

S\'javo: 2011-04-07 13:48

african teams takes this competition seriously unlike ueropen counterparts who bring their second stream squad which for me shows sign of disrespect to mzanzi and africa as a whole.

S\'javo: 2011-04-07 13:59

Bin Laden: 2011-04-07 13:45 [ Report ]

what the F.U.C.K are you talking about, this article has nothing to do with sunkops you idiot or you also want sundooms to considered for this competition!

no be una fault: 2011-04-07 14:07

I wonder why this piece of wack is called vodacom CHALLENGE cup, d modest name should have been vodacom LEVERAGE cup

tshepo molatedi : 2011-04-07 14:29

Kaizer chiefs is going 2 win vodacom cup as we know is made 4 chiefs

Kaizer\'s Chief: 2011-04-07 14:31

Lets boycot this sham of a tournerment, this is BULL let all the white supporters go daar coz vele it was planned for them.we dont can u imagine EnyimbaAl ahly or TP Mazembe taking part in this tourney and i definatley know it will be cheaper to have these teams as i knw these English clubs cost a fortune to appear anywhere in the world

I WRITE WHAT I LIKE: 2011-04-07 15:37

This is the most stupid tournament, ever!

Look at this:

kamza : 2011-04-07 13:22

That will be a great tournament and it will attract the interest of many people. Not just an African team but the African Champs.

The Ghost: 2011-04-07 17:24

Yeah man, this is getting to be a bore man!!!

RaziGod: 2011-04-07 17:39

I wuould like to agree with those calling for a different team.We have seen enough of TTNHAM We nid something fresh and diffrent u no.And Vodacom nids to probably widen its scope az well. I min THey shud cast their eyes to different leagues apart from the EPL.France,spain.portugal,germany etc.Evn teams in the MLS are not that bad.

Apage : 2011-04-07 19:00

This tounerment have lost it's spark since the exclusion of African teams. Zodwa's effort have been lost what are we gaining from EPL's teams nothing TP Mazembe is what it today because of the vodacom chllng.I can beat my last cent that G.Bale will not be coming to SA..

babaj: 2011-04-07 19:51

Truth, the truth is the final results will be:
pirates 0, barca 10
chiefs 10, tp mazembe 0
final
chiefs 2, barca 2 and barca win 5-4 on penalties.

babaj: 2011-04-07 19:55

the format of the vodacom challenge is boring. it was better when they invited two african giants. suggestion african teams that have won the league in their countries.

samuel : 2011-04-07 20:26

jabu chiefs cn hardly score more dan 1 goal when playing vodacom team side let alone mvela,so wt do u mean by dat truth?when was da last time chiefs hv won a game?

benjie from Nongoma : 2011-04-07 21:06

I still don't understand as to why did mr Khoza, mr Motaung & their panel decided to cancel the invitation of African teams, I remember watching the likes of Raja Casablanca, St Eloi Lupopo, Asec Mimosas and so on. That was the opportunity of them (Chiefs & Bucs) to get the best foreign players, I so wish that these games can attract more fans please let us support our teams & show English how good our players are when we blow our vuvuzelas loud!!!

Swona Champ!: 2011-04-08 08:06

chiefs can keep this plastic/cup! its ok,

Shapa khozi shapa kaizer chiefs wil win this cup mayibuye vodacom mayibuye

saspursfan: 2011-05-19 14:47

ignorant people, spurs r not a small team, when last did TP Mazembe beat the likes of Ac Milan, Inter milan, Werder Bremen, FC Twente.. oh wait thats right they have never..even if spurs field their second squad(Danny Rose,Andros Townsend, Jake Livermore,Kyle Naughton,Kyle Walker) they will walk all over pirates/chiefs..im willing to put money on these games. We are lucky and should be gratefull that a team like spurs will come to our country and participate, our teams will take alot from these players. besides spurs do so much charity work here and have a foundation in rustenburg for developing the youth, now tell me what your "glorious tp mazembe" have to offer????????and yes i am a major Tottenham Supporter! and besides u ask why these other teams wont come is cause they dnt want to waste there team or skill on teams like we have, so once again u guys should be gratefull for Tottenham coming here
