APRIL'S FOOL: Benni joining Chiefs

As many of you suspected, our earlier story of Benni McCarthy signing a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs was indeed an April’s Fool’s joke.
However, the KICK OFF offices did receive a fair few mails from worried AmaKhosi fans demanding to know whether this was true. It seems the former Bafana Bafana striker will struggle to find a home in the PSL if he decides to come back.
ORIGINAL STORY
Former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs, KickOff.com can exclusively reveal.
The 33-year-old will return to the South African top-flight for the first time since a loan spell at Cape Town Spurs in 1997, boosting the Amakhosi front-line in the 2011/12 season.
It is understood that McCarthy has signed a one-year contract, with an option for a further season. His move to the club is reminiscent of former Bafana strike partner Shaun Bartlett, who also spent the last two seasons of his career at Naturena.
Chiefs will not have to pay a fee for McCarthy as his deal with English Premiership West Ham United comes to and end at the close of the current season.
He has barely played for the Hammers this year due to a mixture of injury and weight problems, and has not been registered for second half of the season, meaning he cannot play in Premiership matches for the side.
McCarthy's capture will not go down all that well with some Chiefs fans, given his tetchy relationship with South African supporters over his availability for the national team down the years.
But he has still managed 31 goals in 79 appearances for Bafana Bafana and is the highest scorer in the country's history, playing at two World Cups in 1998 and 2002, but missing out on the 2010 event after being dropped by Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira from his 23-man squad.
