'Killer' knew the winning goal would come

Bafana striker Katlego Mphela - Best goal I scored for Bafana

Posted: 28 March 2011 Time: 10:44 am

Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela says his winning goal against Egypt at Ellis Park on Saturday will go down as one of the best of his career.

Mphela scored in the last minute of the game against Egypt  to hand South Africa a win, three points and their first victory over the Pharaohs in a competitive game.   'Killer' latched onto defender Anele Ngcongca's defence-splitting pass and shot past goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, sending the whole country into frenzy.   "This was the pass I was waiting for the whole 90 minutes. When got it I knew exactly where to place the ball. It was very emotional to see the ball going into the net.

_quote

"It was a tough day for me up-front; the Egyptian defence was very smart and did not give anything away.   "I tried my best, making runs up-front, but I didn't get any supply from Schillo (Steven Pienaar) or Shabba (Siphiwe Tshabalala) as the Egyptians closed down the spaces. But still I had a feeling that a goal was going to come as they looked very tired towards the end of game.   "It was so exciting to score a goal against such a big team and this goal will go down as one of my best for Bafana Bafana."   Mphela's goal on Saturday against Egypt was his 19th in Bafana Bafana colours, but he is still 12 behind all-time record goalscorer Benni McCarthy, who netted 31 times for Bafana.   The Mamelodi Sundowns player concedes that it will be a big mountain to climb to catch up to McCarthy.   "It's going to be really tough, but records are there to be broken and there are still more games to play for Bafana."

Well done Mphela for making the country proud, whether you are a Bafana Ba setlaela player does not make any difference to me as long as you SA no 1 striker, I made it clear that I would like to see you getting the golden boot this than Musona, this will be good for our country and it will give inpiration to young stikers. Whether Sundoms stupid fans makes it their victory I don't care, I know they will remember you when you leave their but you will always belong to the national team which means SA owns you more than the way Sundoms believe they own you.

However I believe that Pitso should get more strikers to give Mphela competition because he knows that he will play whether he play good or he is on a holiday.

The day we South Africans manage to spot a difference between a club and a national team the better, this thing of Pirates, Chiefs and Sundowns players when commenting about the national team is so immarture. Why cant we win together and lose together as a nation?

If u know for sure the coach wont substitute you, u might as well remain hopeful.Max points in the back, which is what the counrty needs...

I i hope and wish we win the return leg in Egypt. 100% behind Bafana and still doubting Pitso's planning and approach not forgrting Arrogancy which shudnt be confused with self-bielief.

Bottom line, your runs are not clever. Its easy to mark you and you make it difficult for midfielders to play passes you. Thats why most of your goals are penalties or you just ran forward and found yourself one on one with the keeper. You dont have an intelligent football mind. You talk too much Mphela. How come you wait 90 minutes for the goal to come. Thats why we win by 1 goal or find it difficult to score because your mentality is grey, and you are so sure of the scheme because the coach "knows you" an he doest "know other players".

You played bad the whole game Mphela and you know it. How thats why th ball kept going back because you dont know how to open up the defenders with intelligent run. Welldone for scoring but yekela ukuspita nkomo.
