Mamelodi Sundowns fullback Method Mwanjale will captain Zimbabwe against Mali

Mwanjale to captain Zim

Posted: 2011-03-23 13:01

Mamelodi Sundowns fullback Method Mwanjale has been named captain of the Zimbabwean national team to face Mali in an away Afcon qualifier this weekend.

Zimbabwe, who drew with both Liberia and lowly Cape Verde Islands in their first two qualifying fixtures, were scheduled to leave for Bamako this morning and team manager Shariff Mussa says Mwanjale will lead the 18-man squad, which also includes five other South African-based stars.

"We have many committed and experienced players in the team, but the coach felt that Mwanjale should lead the team this time," says Mussa of the Sundowns rightback, chosen ahead the likes of Platinum Stars skipper Tapuwa Kapini and Kaizer Chiefs vice-captain Tinashe Nengomasha for that role.

This is not the first time that the Sundowns utility player has led Zimbabwe in international competitions, as he was thrust into the same role - captaining his country's home-based stars while still turning out for former Zimbabwean PSL champions Caps United.

It appears that Mwanjale – used regularly as a rightback at Sundowns - has also won the favour of newly-appointed Zimbabwean coach Norman Mapeza to lead the quest for Warrior's third ever qualification for the Afcon finals, having been there in 2004 and 2006 and getting booted out in the first round in each of those occasions.

Mwanjale also captained the Zimbabwean team which travelled to Asia and allegedly took bribes in return for throwing matches for betting syndicates on tours in 2008 and 2009 against likes of Thailand, Malaysia and Syria.

Other South African-based players in the traveling party are Kapini, Nengomasha, Kaizer Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe, Ajax Cape Town forward Khama Billiart, Nengomasha and Nyasha Mushekwi.

Former Ajax Cape Town striker Achieford Gutu, who returned to his homeland without kicking a ball in a competitive match for the Urban Warriors, is also included in the line-up.

Hey U Haters!!Knowledge Musona is injured,We Zimbabweans we stand by our National coach & which kind players he chooses! This Atticle is written by a biased reporter always looking for some dirt to provoke reaction from shallow minded readers, guess what!Method Mwanjali is a true leader & he deserves a second chance.Under difficult circumstances Zimbabwe thrives to do well but always fall short along the way but in that failure we are never alone, therefore we dont lose sleep since we are a proud Nation that we always excell in other areas of life.Mxolis Ncube knows nothing about the game of soccer besides pointing the nagatives whilst overlooking the efforts these young lads bring to show in South African football Arenas.

I still maintain. Whwn will you wvwe see a Nguni, Venda aor Sotho Zimbabwean in the Zimbabwean national team? Yes Shonanostra triblists go and lose as you have done in the past. You win your tribalism and poor governance. You maintain that you are the most educated. To be frank Tunisia is number 1 in Africa 2. Kenya is second. After all Nigeria produces Phd equivalent to your total population every five years. They have scientists and proffessors of repute. footballers athletes etc representing every country in the world and who is Zimbabwe anyways footballwise, academic wise etc! By the way even your univercities at their peak were never rated above Makerere, Wits and UCT.

WILLARD: 2011-03-24 08:04

@lehlohonolo. and where is the Rainbow nation in terms of literacy rate? shame on you. if we had half as much resources as you guys i just wonder where we would be. By the way you distaste for Zim is clear indicator of inferiority complex.

PRINCE: 2011-03-24 08:19

Trevor and Willard, vakomana mirai kuuraya Lehlohonolo nechirungu, these guys dont learn such kind of English here in SA. With our little resources back home and the stop and starts at schools, these guys are still far in terms of producing TOP results. They are getting better now only because our brothers and sisters are teachers here now. 30% of teachers are Zimbabwean hence the improvement in education.

Zuma: 2011-03-24 09:54

Hey Gents don't listen to this Lehlohonono, he is a Zim too who just want to cause hatred between Zim fans and south african fans. I have been tracking him for a long time because i wanted to undrstand why he hates Zims. As for Mxolisi i was told by my friend who work at Kickoff that this guy is a Zimbabwean and his other collegues always wondering why he is trying to pull his country down. He wrote some negative stories about Zim before about age cheating the team selling games. My friend was telling me that we have a case like bots who did sell the games in the past but he chose to ignore that. As for age cheating it is a common knowledge here in south africa that we do the same we always sweep it under the carpet.
So stop pulling your country down, people like lehlohonolo should go back to his country and start rebuilding rather than hiding here pretending to be South African

Itunes22: 2011-03-24 09:58

@Lehlohonolo;
The United Nations Annual Report last year was clear that Zimbabwe came out tops above Tunisia,an Arab Country that is only African when it suits them.PhD's are all over the streets of Nigeria, just so you know!Whilst we wont take away anything from our adventurous brothers,we also wont overlook their astonishing talents when it comes to cutting corners in a blink of an eye."Governance" is a word you clearly will never understand, especially if you cant even spell the word University!Anyway, this is a soccer forum which obviously you dont understand. There are no Tribal lines drawn in Zimbabwe, thats why we equip ourselves with knowledge to bully our way into a society like yours & come out tops!EAT THIS...

Zuma: 2011-03-24 23:27

Lehlohonolo u seem to have mentioned Wits university. There are more than 30 professors at Wits only who are Zimbabweans. So it is a fact that this guys are teaching us here and we are luck to have people who are highly educated here we should call them the teachers of africa.Even here in south africa all the universities and college are filled by Zimbabweans studying. Some of us we don't want to study and we are only good at dancing kwaito in the streets while our fellow brothers are studying. We are good at calling ourselves a rich country but the money is not in our hands. I think we should call them the teachers of africa.
