Celtic crash out of Cup

Bloemfontein Celtic’s Nedbank Cup ambitions were cut short on Saturday night as they were defeated 1-0 by Platinum Stars at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in a Last 32 tie.
Henrico Botes scored the only goal of the game as Dikwena inflicted a rare home defeat on Phunya Sele Sele, who have not lost a league game at their Seisa Ramabodu fortress this season.
Stars created the better opportunities early on, with Thuso Phala and Lebo Ramolesa both being denied by Patrick Tignyemb from chances that they really should have made more of.
Celtic’ first opening arrived in the 24th minute when Bennett Chenene held off a challenge in the box and got away a low shot, but Tapuwa Kapini was well placed to make a comfortable save.
The rest of the first half had no real, definable pattern to it, as the game was too often broken up by petty free kicks and other stoppages.
Dikwena came close to breaking the deadlock on 40 minutes when a Bradley Grobler free kick was spilled by Tignyemb, but the visitors’ players following up were not able to capitalise on the loose ball.
On the stroke of half time it was Celtic who rued a missed chance, with tall central defender Erick Mathoho hitting the crossbar with a header before Solomon Mathe was forced to clear off his own goal line from a follow-up effort.
The stop-start nature of the game continued in the second half, and the first real notable action after the break arrived in the 64th minute when Henrico Botes directed a good diving header on target only for Tignyemb to tip it over the bar.
Three minutes later Botes finally broke the deadlock, scoring with a superb curling shot into the bottom corner of the net that gave Tignyemb no chance and was greeted by almost total silence in the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.
Stars substitute Sibusiso Msomi almost made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute but Celtic’s goalkeeper once again came up with a fine save to keep his team in the hunt.
However, his efforts were in vain, as Dikwena held out for the win and move into the Last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup.
