Sundowns get past Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns gained revenge on Golden Arrows for the first round loss they suffered to the KZN side when they ran out 2-1 winners at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

A slow start to the game by both sides gained momentum as the Tshwane side started to stamp their authority over the home team.

Bafana Bafana striker Lerato Chabangu enjoyed the first two chances of the game, but saw his first effort blocked, while his second shot from outside the box flew over the bar.

In the 19th minute Mauricio Pequenino was handed the chance to put Abafana Bes'thende in front, but shot wide from only eight yards out.

Chabangu and Godfrey Sapula had further chances for Sundowns before the opening goal finally arrived three minutes before the break.

New recruit Bryan Aldave was the man to break the deadlock, finishing from inside the box after being set up by Esrom Nyandoro.

The Brazilians remained on top in the second half and came close to scoring through Robyn Johannes' header and Fanyana Dhladhla's shot early on.

In the 56th minute Dhladhla was given the chance to shoot from outside the box and beat Maseko to register his side's second goal.

In the 72nd minute Arrows got themselves back in to the game when they earned a penalty after Jorge Acuna fouled Thokozani Mshengu inside the box. Papi Zothwane slotted the ball past Calvin Marlin to give Arrows hope for the remainder of the game.

The goal spurred the home side into action as they went in search of the equaliser, but despite several forays into the Sundowns box, they were not able to find the goal and had to resign themselves to a loss.
