After taking the lead early on through Aleni Lebyane, Free State Stars were robbed of victory when a late penalty goal from Lehlohonolo Majoro saw AmaZulu claim a share of the spoils in an Absa Premiership match played at Goble Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The first 45 minutes saw the home side on top and controlling matters in the middle of the park with their non-stop running and tough tackling.
AmaZulu, on the other hand, really struggled to get hold of the ball and when they did they quickly lost possession with some poor passing.
The game started a little hesitantly with both teams trying to assert their dominance, but Stars quickly found their footing which resulted in the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute.
Some good build-up play by the Ea Lla Koto saw Aleni Lebyane find space inside the 18-yard box, and the Stars player made no mistake with an accurate finish in the top left hand corner of the net, 1-0.
Twelve minutes later and Kingston Nkhatha came within inches of doubling Free State’s lead when his 20-yard shot sailed narrowly over the cross-bar.
The first half only saw AmaZulu with one real chance on goal in the 33rd minute. Tshweu Mokoro tried his luck with a long range effort from 35-yards out that was comfortably saved by Kennedy Mweene.
The second half, however, saw the visitors come back into the game a bit, but still they struggled to find decent opportunities in front of goal.
In fact Usuthu’s most decent chance of the half came in the 67th minute when Muziwandile Khwela let fly from about 25-yards out, but Mweene was up to the task producing a fine finger tip save to deny the AmaZulu man.
The visiting side continued to plunder away in attack, but found the Stars defence to resolute to be broken, that was until they were awarded a penalty kick a minute before the end of play.
The referee adjudged Manti Moholo to have handled the ball inside the box and duly pointed to the spot. Lehlohonolo Majoro stepped up and slotted the penalty-kick to draw his side level, 1-1.
In the end the game finished all square and Stars will feel robbed of two points after leading the game from the 13th minute. The late equaliser, though, for AmaZulu means they extend their unbeaten run in the league to eight.
