Mngqithi disagrees with Zondo sacking

Posted: 2008-03-05 05:32

Golden Arrows’ coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes Bloemfontein Celtic have made a hasty decision in firing manager Khabo Zondo.

Zondo was forced to part ways with Phunya Sele Sele after a recent run of poor results, which culminated in a 3-1 capitulation to Moroka Swallows on Sunday.

Celtic are currently in 10th place on the PSL table. They have a game in hand on most of the teams above them and overall have had a reasonable season thus far, especially if it is taken into account that they have had their fair share of injuries.

Mngqithi, now enjoying a fine run of form with Abafana Bes’thende, was understudy to Zondo during his reign at the KZN club which ended last season.

Mngqithi believes the decision made by the Celtic management was a hasty one.

“I think it was a premature decision. With time almost all clubs go through a bad run of form. Clubs need to support the players and coaches during these times,” he told KickOff.com.

“But in South African soccer this is the culture. If a team has a bad run of four or five games, it can seal a manager’s fate. But it should be kept in mind that any team can struggle – Manchester United manager Alex Fergusson took ages to get going when he took over, but look where he is now,” says Mngqithi.

It seems as if @ about 60% of psl coaches will be fired this season, cause u loose 3 games u are out forgeting that u won 4 or 5 games in a row. What happened to mr zondo is a harsh decition. At the begining everybody was praising the coach now injuries & suspencions are there, but management can`t see it.Most of his games it was 6-8 of his starting lineup out of suspencions & injuries ohh what a decition made by management a very harsh 1.Wow who is gonna be next?, I hope not mr muchini.10 million yi ta hlongorisa vo tala nguva yi nga se hela.

Except for Platinum Stars all the PSL teams have incompetant management teams, its truly a disgrace for the richest league in the continent, why cant they learn from their european counterparts that patience is the key . As for Lepards, need i say more.

Its a bad management decison from celtic. Those were jelling well + apart from that Zondo's players were prone to injuries. South African Team Managements are naive + run teams like spaza shops

Mokhele: 2008-03-05 07:40

celtics will see themselves hoovering at the bottom next season if they continue to manage like this " taking harsh decisions" do we have managing skills.i mean celtics plyed against Amazulu and they lossed concentration during the last minute and defeated, the coach gets the blame. The very same incident happened last sunday when they defeated by Swallows and they sucked the coach.

with a list of injuries at celtics they might see themself out of top 8 i bet.look at Derby country since the beginning of the season they've enjoying the hot sit at the bottom of the table, and sucking the coach wont help the situation at all eg.

This is another sad story in our soccer fraternity. Sleeping giants like Celtics have no continuity. Celtic is a brand with enormous potential. I believe zondo would have gone a long way to bring success to Celtic. Since Pirates, Sundown’s and Chiefs have slacked, all the other teams see themselves as Big guns, thus there is no plan of action as everything is based on current results and not building for the future. Every team has to lose sometime. The is no set standard in our football anymore, even teams with one trophy in their cabinet or nothing at all see themselves as worthy champions. What a shame!

I don't understand Jimy,David & Motsepe, how can u fire a coach at this time of the seoson, its not that these coaches are not doing their job, the players did let them down by mising clear goals.

eezee: 2008-03-05 08:52

now i understand y they say money is the root of all evil (10million),i think SA coaches must start a Coaches'Union of sort...who's next Barker?

Elia: 2008-03-05 09:00

Firing a coach won't bring you results during this time of the season. All times are fighting to avoid relegation. When teams win, only players get praises but when it loose, the coach has to be blamed. Why can't we learn from European teams. Mr Thidiela. Mr Motsepe and Jimmy get real

mcebisi: 2008-03-05 09:23

I think its better than Zimbabwe where last season there were only two coaches that managed to finish the season in their respective teams. It was the log-leaders and the runners up who managed to stay ih their coaches.

Vuyani: 2008-03-05 09:35

I understand the man is talking from the coaches' point of view knowing that as the caoch he might be fired anytime. The man is forgeting one thing that soccer is business and the R10 million 1st price makes the bosses go crazy when they think howmuch they gonna miss

Ace: 2008-03-05 09:54

bafowethu, if a coach doesnt perform he will be fired. period. it's not a south african thing but a soccer thing. ask morinho. he was fired at chelsea. ask fabio capello. he was fired at real madrid. only jomo sono wont be fired.

Well it is strange that Manqoba feels this way about the sacking of Khabo from Celtics. This is the same person who took over when Khabo was dismissed at Arrows and did not plead with management to give Khabo another chance. I am also one of those who feels like Khabo had a raw deal from Siwelele but other reasons for his dismissals are known by the man and the team....so tough luck for Khabo that is the life of a soccer coach.

Lucky

Francis: 2008-03-05 13:13

I agree with manqoba - every team wants to win at all costs, and it doesn't matter if their planning for the season was poor (as some teams don't plan at all). We still have a long way to go with our football in this country.

It's senseless 2 fire coaches unnecessarily esp that Celtic was neva bad this season. management of every team must know that firing coaches is not a solution because there's always a win, lose, draw and position 1-16 depending on the number of teams. rotating coaches or replacing coaches with their mediocre counterparts is baseless, same happens to coaches buying his favorite mediocre players, firing good players after few months the same coach got fired, meaning the team need to regroup again.
