National First Division roundup

Cosmos go clear by 10 points

Posted: 2011-02-21 07:36

National First Division Inland Stream leaders Jomo Cosmos continue to march relentlessly towards the Promotional Play-offs after a 2-1 away win against Dynamos, while their nearest rivals, University of Pretoria and Black Leopards, fought out a 1-1 draw.

In the Coastal strean, top-of-the-table Bay United whacked last placed Hanover Park 4-2, but second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu again dropped points, only managing to draw against FC Cape Town.

Ezenkosi are now 10 points ahead thanks to fine finishes by Rhulane Manzini and Bamuza Sono at the Giyani Stadium, however, this loss for Patrick Malabela's club - coupled with yet another victory for Batau - leaves the former PSL outfit in real danger of going down into the Vodacom Second Division.

Not long ago it looked as though Batau was dead and buried, without a single victory all season, yet on Saturday afternoon Senyane Mphethi's team beat on-form FC AK 2-1 in their own back yard which leaves them a mere four points adrift of lackluster Dynamos – with 15 points to play for.

Thokozani Sekotlong's goal for Tuks ensures Steve Barker's side remains second, and with Witbank Spurs losing 1-0 to United FC on Sunday the race for second spot looks now to rest between AmaTuks and Leopards.

Umlilo knocked more nails into Hanover's coffin with Mulondo Sikhwivhilu scoring a brace at Wynberg, that gives David Bright's outfit a three-point lead but leaves the Mother City's club rock bottom, although fellow strugglers Nathi Lions also failed.

AmaBhubhesi lost a seven-goal thriller 3-4 to Carara Kicks with Mazwi Mncube, Nhlanhla Mncube and Lindani Buthelezi on target for the Durban side.

Kicks are now within striking distance of Thanda who were held 1-1 at home in Richards Bay.

At the Buffalo City Stadium, Blackburn Rovers picked up another vital point, holding African Warriors to a 2-2 draw with AmaRover striker Lerato Manzini completing his brace - giving Rovers some breathing space.

Tsepho Tomanyane and Jimmy Zakazaka netted for Warriors.
