Santos held Kaizer Chiefs to a 2-2 draw during a drama-filled Premiership game at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The first half was action packed, with Chiefs enjoying the better of play, creating numerous chances on goal, while Santos always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Amakhosi were rampant in the opening stages and Kaizer Motaung Jnr almost opened the scoring when he lobbed Tshepo Motsoeneng in the 11th minute, but the Santos keeper was able to get a crucial touch to send the ball wide of goal.

Motsoeneng followed that up as he made a brave save from Tinashe Nengomashe’s well-connected shot from the resultant corner.

There were also snap shots for Knowledge Musona and Reneilwe Letsholonyane as the visitors ran rampant early on.

However, it was the Peoples’ Team who took a surprise 23rd minute lead when Vuyisile Wana raced onto Salmaan King’s outstanding through ball and coolly rounded Ithumeleng Khune before finishing into an empty net.

Chiefs came straight back at Santos and their efforts paid off in when Jimmy Tau stormed into the box to get on the end of Musona’s through ball, where he was tripped by Ricardo Skippers.

Musona took the spot-kick and easily converted, making it 1-1.

The remainder of the half saw the Soweto giants continuing to dominate, there was no addition to the scoreline.

Chiefs were close to scoring just after the break, but Motsoeneng was again up the task, making a breathtaking save from Motaung’s header.

It was at the other end that the next goal came, Jurie Basie putting Santos 2-1 up with a glancing header after King’s lobbed cross into the box after 52 minutes.

But the Soweto side were back to level terms just over 20 minutes later when Sthembiso Ngcobo emphatically headed home Tshabalala’s deflected cross.

Chiefs were denied an 84th minute penalty when Musona's shot appeared to hit Wayne Arendse's arm.

Both sides had their moments in a thrilling finale, but neither side really came close to scoring as the match ended all square.
