Chiefs come from behind to win

Posted: 13 February 2011 Time: 17:33

Kaizer Chiefs beat Platinum Stars 3-2 in a League game after coming back from 2-1 down on Sunday afternoon.

Stars’ goals were scored by a Thuso Phala brace while Chiefs’ goals were scored by a Kaizer Motaung Jnr brace and a goal by Reneilwe Letsholonyane (the PSL we need to make a decision as Siphiwe Tshabalala also got a touch).

Phala made his mark on the game very early on, picking up a clever pass from Mduduzi Nyanda before beating two Amakhosi defenders and chipping the ball past Itumeleng Khune for the opening goal in just the second minute of play.

And the speedy attacker almost doubled the hosts’ lead twice in the 11th minute, seeing two efforts in quick succession blocked by Khune and defender Dominic Isaacs.

Although Stars looked the likelier scorers, Chiefs were in fact dominating possession and territory, patiently looking for a way to pierce the home team’s rearguard.

And they were rewarded in the 27th minute with a thumping header from Kaizer Motaung Jr that leveled the scores at 1-1. Siphiwe Tshabalala was the architect of the goal, providing a fine cross from the left flank.

However, parity lasted just eight minutes, with Phala scoring his second of the day in the 35th minute – a cracking drive into the top corner of the net – to put Stars back in front at 2-1.

Chiefs had a couple of opportunities to pull level early in the second half but they had to wait until the 61st minute to finally make it 2-2. Jimmy Tau crossed from the right, Reneilwe Letsholonyane saw his effort half-saved by Kapini and Tshabalala scored with a tap-in though the ball may have crossed the line already.

Five minutes later Motaung Jr made it 3-2, putting Chiefs into the lead for the first time with a low shot after running onto a flick-on from Letsholonyane.

Stars worked hard in what remained of the game to find an equaliser, but they were unable to find a third goal. The hosts also ended the game with ten men when Solomon Mathe was dismissed in injury time for a second bookable offence.
