Moroka Swallows beat Maritzburg United 1-0 in a League match on Saturday night.
The victory was secured by an early penalty from Siyabonga Nomvete.
In the fifth minute, Maritzburg United’s Mor Diouf was adjudged to have fouled Koketso Mmotong and referee Jerome Damon awarded a penalty. From the resultant spot kick, Nomvete made no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way.
After the goal, spearheaded by the presence of Malian striker Cisse Bougouta, Swallows enjoyed ball possession and always looked to release their strikers but they were disappointed by inaccurate passing and good defending from United’s defence.
The goal sparked the two teams into action, as they threw everything into the game, but the home team had a slight edge over their opponents and continued to penetrate their danger zone.
Swallows could have gone to the break with a 2-0 lead but Nomvete missed Swallows’ second penalty of the day after his attempt hit the upright. This was after Christian Alder was adjudged to have handled inside the box in the 37th minute.
Swallows were the first to test a goalkeeper in the second half when Mmotong produced a great save out of Shu-Aib Walters in the 49th minute.
From that moment on, Swallows kept it tight at the back, with Ramahlwe Mphahlele marshaling his defence well, but Maritburg United did not rest on their laurels and wait for a miracle to happen. They kept on searching for an equaliser but they seemed to have left their scoring boots at home.
