Bidvest Wits put 6 past Vasco da Gama

Posted: 6 February 2011 Time: 18:05

Bidvest Wits beat Vasco da Gama 6-0 in a Premiership clash at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Sifiso Vilakazi, Sifiso Myeni (brace), Bhongolwethu Jayiya (brace) and Stanton Fredericks made very sure that Wits collected all three points.

From the first whistle Wits played with so much authority that Vasco simply had no answer for them.

It came as no surprise when Sifiso Vilakazi opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The Bidvest striker cleverly turned inside the box before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot that left Posnett Omony with the formality of picking the ball out the back of the net.

Roger de Sa's side enjoyed a threatening spell midway through the first half, and Vasco looked unsettled at the back.

Sifiso Myeni showed why national coach Pitso Mosimane presented him with his first call-up for Bafana Bafana when he scored a cracker in the 10th minute.

Myeni pounced on the ball from outside the box with a powerful shot to give his side a 2-0 lead.

After the goals, Wits seemed in the mood for a crushing victory.

However, Vasco survived and steadfastly withstood the Clever Boys’ dangerous moves. The Cape side also made a few runs towards Wits’ defence but could not get the ball beyond Darren Keet.

Sibusiso Zuma blasted a shot over the bar in the 22nd minute and in the 40th minute he could only watch in disbelief as his goal-bound shot was cleared off the line by Derrick Spencer.

Myeni scored his side’s third, and his second for the day, with another powerful strike in the 43rd minute to give Wits a comfortable lead heading into half-time.

And after the break, Wits continued where they left off. They launched their attacks from the midfield and new kid on the block Bhongolwethu Jayiya put the game beyond Vasco's reach when he scored Wits’ fourth goal from a rebound in the 50th minute.

Even the introduction of Keenin Lesch and Omar Hendricks in the second half could not galvanise the visitors.

Jonathan Armogam could have at least pulled one back in the 70th minute, but his shot went over the bar.

Wits increased their tally to five after Jayiya’s strike in the 70th minute, before Stanton Fredericks scored the sixth in the 76th minute.
