Kalusha Bwalya slams 'unethical' Safa

Zambian FA President Kalusha Bwalya has described Safa as ‘unethical’ after hearing Kenya will now play Bafana Bafana on Wednesday – despite having previously arranged a match against ‘Chipolopolo’.

Burkina Faso’s decision to pull out of the scheduled match against Pitso Mosimane’s side in Rustenburg saw Safa announce ‘The Harambee Stars’ as their new opponents on Wednesday night.

But that was news to the legendary Bwalya, who had believed everything was in place for Zambia to play Kenya in Nairobi’s Nyaya Stadium on the same evening.

“There is no way they can do this so soon before the match was going to take place. Everyone knew we were supposed to be playing Kenya, but Safa have pushed us out of the way for their own interests and I don’t think that is ethical,” he tells KickOff.com.

“We have already sent out information to all the players in the squad telling them to report on Sunday for the match. So for Kenya to suddenly pull out boggles the mind.”

At a press conference on Thursday to announce the Bafana squad for the match, Safa president Kirsten Nematandani was at pains to point out that he was unaware of Zambia’s arrangement.

“Relationships (with other national associations) are important but we needed a game,” he stated. “We didn’t know that Kenya already had something arranged and we wouldn’t just go out and snatch an opponent from another country.”

But Bwalya was fuming in response to those comments. “That is exactly what they have done,” he says.

“If Safa have negotiated with Kenya at our expense then I don’t think they care about our relationship at all. It’s very sad because I always thought they valued our support.”

My grey matter tells me that Safa bribed Kenya with the billions they received from Fifa- the money was so large it could sustain the Kenyan FA for the next three to 5 years. And young innocent FA like Zambia have to be victims of Safa incompetence...

This is very unethical by SAFA, especially taking into account the relationship between the two countries, Zambia and South Africa. SAFA knew about the planned friendly between Zambia and Kenya, it was all over the media and was listed on the FIFA fixtures. So for Nematandani to say they didn't know is bull**** and is meant to disguise SAFA's incompetencies and ineffiencies.

It is disgusting to see that tribalism is still so strong in Mzansi. I don't ever recall people blaming the many blunders committed by Molefi Oliphant on his being a Lejapere. Football is not like your girlfriend and you can't even begin to compare the two. FA's are supposed to honour contracts signed and held by other parties, thats just what happened. Some of you might remember, why do you think Chelsea was banned from signing on new players one or two seasons ago, its because they approached a player owned by another club, no one said, "blame the player because he knew he already had a contarct with another club". Those are the sad dynamics of African football which is trying hard to re-organise themselves like Uefa. The trickle down effect is that the more powerful nations will feed of the smaller less powerful nations to be stronger. I feel sorry for nations like Zambia, Ghana, Kenya. Who are always competitive but will always fall by ways side when commercially driven has beens or former power houses (Cameroon, Nigeria, SA, etc) roll into town.
