Makgabo resigns from LOC

Posted: 2008-03-01 08:38

Tumi Makgabo has resigned as the communications and international relations manager of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Announcing this yesterday afternoon, the LOC's CEO, Danny Jordaan, said: “We have accepted Tumi's resignation. She has made a sterling contribution to the Organising Committee and we wish her well in her future endeavours.”

Makgabo has been a broadcaster for over a decade and was previously the host of CNN's Inside Africa programme.

“I have enjoyed working with the Organising Committee and believe the 2010 Fifa World Cup will be a resounding success. I am, however, looking forward to focusing on the other projects I have been involved in.”

This just shows the lack of leadership Jordan, he failed at SAFA and he is going to mess up the tournament. We all know that only the presence of Madiba made FIFA to vote for us because he was using the very same failed 2006 bid.

Charlie: 2008-03-01 09:43

It is a pity that Tumi resigned before she makes an impact. Whatever the reasons made you quit, I still think you could have stayed longer, we need women contribution for this cup to be success and representative.

chili: 2008-03-01 10:25

Mlungu you must start to open your damn mind baby.People i growing up.I am not a spoke person of Tumi but the agecny representing Tumi has stated catergorily that Tumi has resign due to her personal ambitions to concentrate on her personal projects. It has nothing to do with what you has stated.Working on the 2010 World Cup Commetee does not block your mind to think for your long term ambitions of doing what you want to achieve in your own life.By the way you will not work for that commitee for the rest of your life, that commitee will be disbanded after the World Cup in South Africa if you don't know. Please next time you must get full information before you right any nonsence about any issue before hand. Please next time right about the truth of any matter not about what you perceive as the truth you full!!!!!!!

Phumlani: 2008-03-01 11:18

ho ho ho!! this show that people who said that there is a problem in LOC were spot on. Can Mr Khoza call the public the K-word agin when it's clear that there is a problem within the organisation.

Theo: 2008-03-01 11:37

I'm perturbed by Mlungu and Phumlani. You both seem like you can't read or you feel this is an opportunity to blow this resignation out of proportion. Tumi stated that she wants to focus on other projects. Her resignation from CNN to join the LOC did not mean that CNN was badly managed. We resign from jobs daily to pursue other vocations. The LOC job is a contract job. If something lucrative and long-term comes around, one needs to consider ones future first. Stop being so negative about 2010 and the LOC to the point of claiming to be able to read between the lines. Are you aware that some stadia will be delivered ahead of schedule? Do you read or listen to FIFA (for whom the LOC is organizing the tournament), and how pleased they are with progress being made? Khoza did not call anyone a ******, he admonished the said black journalist to stop thinking like one. Please read and listen carefully before airing your pessimistic views.

THEMBI: 2008-03-01 12:36

u r right theo, the r certain people who r always on khoza 's case even when he is right dey will always find something negative about him (especially chips supportes).it is an 4 sa 2 have aleader like khoza.2 mlungu & phumlani please don't 4llow pro 's stupid comments.

Guys let's be honest, the honourable Tumi Makgabo represented us well during her tenure in Atlanta when she presented on CNN. But did that arm her to lead in the 2010 World Cup LOC. I doubt because I beleive that even if you twang, that does not make you the absolute choice for the World Cup. At times she was clueless, maybe she should go back to broadcasting on TV again. But with the contacts that she has already made in soccer, don't be surprised to see her joining one of the glamour teams.

Phathutshedzo: 2008-03-01 13:01

First, Mr T Modise resigned (though he was begged to go back), Now is Tumi. Who is next? With all due respect to Mr Khoza and Mr Jordan, whatever they are doing there is quite disappointing. Surely I am 100% sure that this people are being put under very difficult circumstances that they cant even handle.

Ri do vhona hu no do ya phuna na tshinoni.

wisani: 2008-03-01 13:18

she was just over rated, where did she manage before, she is only good at one thing "Broadcasting", they all have duties and reposbilities to meet, one can not learn to swim in an ocean, i was suprised by these baised hiring of incompetant people, she only resign because she could not take the heat, she chickened out when they were conteplating to fire her, Tim's work was impossible because she was not doing her job which left no chance but resign, they promised to fire if he stays so she resign in affraid of humilition.
this business no about some emotion feeling about her being in CNN, she did not deliver end of story. if you to praise her for CNN not for LOC

mateu: 2008-03-01 17:07

Tumi is clearly a clever woman and clever people don't 'burn their bridges' therefore what they say in the press might be different to what the real reason for her resigning is...
everyone knows there is forever problems in SAFA. what makes u think the LOC will be different when it's run by the same people???

Rudzani Rasta : 2008-03-01 17:35

I am not surprised at all, I always thought she did that job for personal reasons, you know, like decorating her cv before she moved on with her life? I don't have a problem with people like her getting such jobs, however, I have a problem with their motives. I am also looking foward to the day I will read Tim's resignation, it is also on its way, just work on it, you might get that scoop, and do attribute it to me. And I know people are blaming Danny Jordan for the resignation of Tumi Makgabo, and yes that isn't entirely false. But I must say that Jordan is not a bad man, but power is. That dude was cool before SA was awarded the rights to host the world cup, after that he got the message that he might be the biggest thing in SA sport, and that illusion was so uninformed. He is a good guy, but SA sport is politics at its best. People are hired on political grounds than on merit.

SIMON: 2008-03-01 19:27

South Africans let's all wake up and smell the coffee, there are problems at LOC no matter what Irvin Khoza says.JUST READ TUMI'S COMMENTS THEN U CAN SEE IT IS A COMMENT WHICH SHE WAS ASKED TO MAKE BY THE LOC.TUMI IS A VERY HIGH PROFILE PERSON.LET'S HEAR WHAT KHOZA WILL SAY NOW...

Ace: 2008-03-02 06:47

some people like mlungu are just stupid! all organisations have problems but that doesnt mean they cant function. the LOC is just like any organisation, people come and go and there are differences. but that doesnt mean the 2010 will fail. we are going to host the best world cup. and pls stop listening to the negetive sensationalising of small things from the media.

Vusi : 2008-03-02 09:21

I am smelling a rat @LOC, a pregnant one !!! Tumi must just go back to CNN!!!

Dazer: 2008-03-02 19:40

One thing funny abt all resignations from media people(actors, presenters, etc) is that they always claim that its bcos personal projects lined up, only to find e'm 3 months later without jobs.I don't really want to speculate reasons behind her sudden resignation but I think its abt time that we are treated with a bit of respect and be told "real" reasons not these funny reasons we always get when they resign.Anyway I'm one of those people who blives in hiring right people in right positions. I honestly feel there were and still are hundreds of excellent communication managers(with relevant experience nogal) within the country that could feel that position and who were ignored just bcos they aren't on the public eye (never worked for SABC/CNN).Same way I feel abt our 2010 head of communications who apparently was accused of being found wanting in terms of marketing understanding.Personally I feel we shud just hire people who are right for positions(experience, qualifications, skills, etc) and really commited to the cause rather than relying on celebrities. I won't be suprised if the post is given someone from SABC again.

Dikotsi: 2008-03-03 08:25

Some people are just looking for all the negative things in everything that is south African run. I doubt if those people ever had anything good or praised where things are done well and published in the LOC. Maybe they its jealousy that they are not the ones appointed to run those projects. How can we succeed as South African under this kind of climate, on wonders. Even other nations are laughing at us. Give support please, no one is indespensable, even Tumi knows that hence she felt confident about resigning as she knows that someone will come in and continue where she left off. Please people, this is our country, like it ofr not.
