Wits were businesslike as they made sporadic attempts at their opponent’s goalmouth but could not get past their defence in the first 14 minutes of the game.

The Clever Boys went ahead in the 15th minute when Bongolwethu Jayiya, who joined Wits from their development side, capitalised on a poor back pass from Morgan Gould to put his side in the driving seat.

But the story was not finished: Jayiya scored his second for the day in the 42nd minute after a killer pass from Sifiso Myeni.

The Wits debutant’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed as he walked away with the Absa Premiership Man of the Match award for his splendid performance in his first game in the elite league.

United pulled one back in the shape of another debutant, Ashely Hartog, who connected with an inviting cross from Jabulani Maluleke.

After the goal, Gavin Hunt must have hoped his charges would change the situation. The coach looked up to his trump cards, Tefera Fikru, Kermit Erasmus, Maluleke and Tebogo Langerman, but they could not stop Wits’ domination.

All in all, SuperSport United have only themselves to blame, as they also created a number of scoring opportunities but failed to punish their visitors when they had them under siege.

Credit should also go to Bidvest Wits’ keeper, Darren Keet who pulled off some class saves.
