Chiefs up to second

Kaizer Chiefs have moved into second in the Absa Premiership with a 3-1 victory over Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Siphiwe Tshabalala scored an excellent brace, while Stanton Lewis should be credited with Amakhosi's third after the ball deflected off him and into the net, while Fadlu Davids managed a consolation for Maritzburg.

Chiefs took the lead on nine minutes with a beautifully worked goal as Knowledge Musona fed a ball into the path of Tshabalala, whose run was timed to perfection and he rounded Shu-Aib Walters in the Maritzburg goal with ease before firing home.

Lewis created space for himself on the edge of the area and fired in a shot that was well-saved by the keeper, but seconds later there was drama up the other end.

Amakhosi defender Valery Nahayo was adjudged to have handled the ball as he tried to block a low cross and the visitors were awarded a penalty by referee Daniel Bennett. However, Rudolf Bester saw his effort saved by a diving Khune, and Chiefs managed to keep their lead intact.

The home side doubled their advantage on 59 minutes in bizarre circumstances. Nahayo powered in a header from a corner which looked to be going straight at Walters, until it deflected off the back of Lewis and into the net. Nahayo claimed the goal, but it is unlikely that it would have gone in without Lewis' inadvertent touch.

Maritzburg got themselves back into the game when they profited from a mistake from Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who tried to punch the ball clear from a corner but missed, and Davids bundled the ball over the line.

But the joy was short-lived for the visitors as Tshabalala netted a superb third for his side, beating three defenders before unleashing a thunderous drive into the back of the net.

Abia Nale hit the post late on for Chiefs, and there were a few more half-chances, but the scoreline remained the same to the end and Amakhosi move up to second in the table, two points behind Orlando Pirates.

Makhosi I'm not impressed with de way we won 2day's game.our boys were 2 casual @ times.possesion was beong given away too easily.careless mistakes were made too often.that Masango boy must be off-loaded or benched until his takes his game seriously. The boy's decision making is so poor. And will Nale score a goal bathong ? While I was not happy with our performance I'm happy with de 3 points especially wen Chibuku FC are winning matches playin dum dum soccer.

The positive thing about today's game is that while the boys won while playing badly the laws of averages tells me they will play better next week when we play a better team Golden Arrows. I have no doubt we shall win that game.

Tzo, Nale is a good player but he has got poor last touch. The team didn play well maybe it is bcos of new combinations, Masango and Tau on right we were using Dladla all along. Lewis and Musona. Yeye and Shabba showed quality bcos they jst fitted in team that they were not part of previously.
