Students off to get Africa lessons

Bidvest Wits begin their journey into Africa today when they jet off to Reunion to play US Sainte-Marienne at the weekend in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Wits are making their maiden appearance in the continental tournament after winning the Nedbank Cup last season.

The Clever Boys have still to register a win in their last 8 League games, and many feel this is not good news for a team representing the country in such a big tournament.

Coach Roger De Sa has preferred to play mostly youngsters in the League this season and their lack of experience could prove a negative factor in Africa.

In fact, midfielder Sifiso Myeni says they are making the trip to Reunion more as team building exercise.

"We have not been playing well in the past few games but we took a number of positives from the game against Orlando Pirates. We showed that given the opportunity we can score goals but at the same time we need to defend.

"The trip is going to be more of a team building exercise. We are going to play away from the media who have been talking a lot about our recent poor performances and this will give us time to concentrate more on the game than worry about things outside the pitch."

Myeni says the lack of experience in playing in Africa will count for nothing and they are looking forward to enjoying their trip.

"I have played for the South African Development Team in Zambia, but for some of the other players, it will be the first time they are playing outside our borders, apart from a couple of friendly games against teams from Mozambique recently.

"Everybody is excited about the trip and the guys are very confident. We are going there to make the country proud on Saturday."
