Golden Arrows took the KZN Derby with an easy 3-0 win against a hapless Maritzburg United side at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Collins Mbesuma opened the scoring with a penalty, before Nhlanhla Sithole and Njabulo Manqana made it 3-0.
Arrows came close to opening the scoring in the 13 minute, when the visitors’ defence failed to deal with an intelligent cross from the right flank by Mjabulo Manqana, but luckily for them Mbesuma was unable to make contact with the ball.
Mbesuma had another opportunity in the 17th minute, when Mzivukile Tom picked out his run with a well weighted cross from the left flank, but the Zambian headed the ball straight at the keeper.
In the 20th minute, United left-back David Booysens was adjudged to have infringed an Arrows player during a corner kick, and Mbesuma converted the resulting penalty.
Mor Diouf showed his aerial prowess by easily out-jumping his markers in the Arrows penalty area in the 26th and 32nd minutes, but he failed to hit the target with both his headers.
United’s woes were compounded when Booysens was sent off for a second bookable offence five minutes before the interval.
Just after the interval Manqana slid an exquisite pass to Nhlanhla Sithole, who responded with a thunderous drive from just outside United’s penalty area. The low strike easily beat Shu-Aib Walters’ despairing dive.
By this time the visitors looked to be on the ropes and the killer blow was delivered by Manqana who rifled a powerful drive from distance leaving the United goalie clutching thin air yet again.
In the 81st minute Gert Schalkwyk came close to a consolation goal for United, when he beat his marker and fired a curling effort towards goal, that didn’t miss by much.
