Salmaan King scored an injury-time winner as Santos beat Vasco da Gama 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chances were few and far between in a dull first half – action may have been fast and furious as no quarter was asked for or given in the local derby, but there wasn’t too much in the way of constructive play.
Santos had a couple of shots form range, but neither Zairon van Beulen nor Shafeeq Arendse were able to beat Posnett Omony.
There was one glorious chance in the opening half, five minutes before the break, which saw Jonathan Armogam guiding a lob over the head of Posnett Omony, only to see the ball hit the upright.
The second half saw Vasco going down to 10 men after Zeka Karkee squared up to Jurie Basie, following a challenge.
It was the Peoples’ Team who moved up a gear as the game went into the final 15 minutes, with Omony making excellent saves from Erwin Isaacs and then King before Musa Otieno struck the post with a late header.
But Boebie Solomons’ side kept coming at Vasco and were rewarded two minutes into stoppage time as King converted expertly after a slick move in and around the box.
