Ameobi, Moses get Nigeria call

Shola Ameobi, Victor Moses get Nigeria call

Posted: 14 January 2011 Time: 5:48 pm

Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi and Wigan winger Victor Moses have both been named in Samson Siasia's first squad as Nigeria manager for a friendly against Guatemala next month in the USA.

Also named is Karabukspor striker Emmanuel Emenike, who recently committed his international future to Nigeria. Completing the cast of newcomers to the squad are the Italy based duo of Inter Milan's Obiora Nwankwo and Siena's Michael Odibe.

Heartland's Bartholomew Ibenegbu, who scored in a kickabout as Siasia's local Eagles were held to a 2-2 draw by John Obuh's Under-20 team on Thursday in Abuja, is one of two players from the domestic league called up by Siasia. The other is full back Chibuzor Okonkwo, who joined Heartland at the start of the campaign from Bayelsa United.

Full back Adefemi Olubayo gets a surprise call up after languishing in the international wilderness in the wake of his club troubles.

Peter Utaka, who has enjoyed a prolific spell in Denmark over the past two seasons, returns to the fold to stake a claim for a permanent position.

Skipper Joseph Yobo leads seven players from the ill-fated 2010 World Cup campaign.

Full squad:

GOALKEEPERS: Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv, Israel), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei Yehuda, Israel)

DEFENDERS: Chibuzor Okonkwo (Heartland), Ayodele Adeleye (Metallurh Donetsk, Ukraine), Taye Taiwo (Olympic Marseille, France), Michael Odibe (A. C. Siena, Italy), Olubayo Adefemi (Skoda Xanthi, Greece), Elderson Echiejile (Sporting Braga, Portugal), Joseph Yobo (Fenerbahce, Turkey)

MIDFIELDERS: John Mikel Obi (Chelsea, England), Obiora Nwankwo (Inter Milan, Italy), Victor Moses (Wigan Athletic, England), Bartholomew Ibenegbu (Heartland), Olufemi Ajilore (FC Groningen, The Netherlands)

FORWARDS: Ahmed Musa (V.V.V. Venlo, The Netherlands), Osaze Odemwingie (West Brom, England), Obinna Nsofor (West Ham, England), Shola Ameobi (Newcastle, England), Emmanuel Emenike (Karaburkspor, Turkey), Peter Utaka (Odense Boldklub, Denmark)

Good parade of stars but against Gautemala ranked over 100 in the world? I would have been happier playing Chile, Columbia, Uruguay, Honduras with these array of stars. Another goof by NFF, we wait and see.

Way to go... Way to start... We can only see success in the future for Nigerian football.

Hoping the new players live up to expectations.

Finally, Nigerian football is on the way up. Others, watch and see us climb any world ranking available.

good squad of young, old, new, homebase and foreign based players, but i don't think ameobi is a good player. Goodluck siasia.

Is Victor Moses not injured? Really curious that Musa is invited to camp and his team mate Ucheboh is ignored. Overall, I think it is positive to have these new players start their quest for regular Eagle's shirt with Guatamala. Any friendly game is useful for the eagles. However, am disappointed that Mikel who is injured is invited as well.

It is amazing to see a Nigerian playing for Bahrain in the Asian championship. We are everywhere...

OBINNA FOR LIVERPOOL

Liverpool are considering a summer swoop for Inter Milan star Victor Obinna, according to reports in Italy.

The Nigerian international is currently on loan at West Ham and has stated he would like to stay at Upton Park, but his head may be turned if there’s the possibility of a move to Anfield.

The 23-year-old has made just eight appearances for Inter Milan since joining them from Chievo, and the San Siro club are reportedly ready to sell for around £8million.

And that has alerted Liverpool’s newly appointed director of football Damien Comolli. Obinna would fit the criteria of the club’s new American owners who are keen to recruit young players who would have a re-sale value.

Congrats to MOSES. Im glad you are finally in the mix. I love the mix of old and new. I am disappointed Victor Anichebe, Joel OBI and Haruna are not in this team. I would have loved to see them ball. I live in Tennessee and would love to be in Miami live. ANYBODY who will be attending this game please holla.

So what happened to Nedum ONUOHA. Despite media speculations he is not on the list. This can only mean one thing. The media hype of Siasia's trip to Europe forced the English FA to ask Capello to invite Nedum. Sometimes it pays to keep your plans secret until you have acted on them. If Capello names Nedum for Englands friendly on Feb 9, Im sorry for him. He will now be their third choice right back after Glen Johnson and Micah Richards

wow wat an insult to joel obi, okoro and other good players if a rubbish player like ameobi can just come and get shirt. i thought siasia is different but his not so he didn't call neither emmanuel ekpo, ibrahim, okoro, lukman or joel obi and ameobi is called siasia i'm dissapointed this squad is totally disgraceful. even obiora nwankwo i have watched him and watched joel obi nwankwo is not better the guy has been poor in all games he has played for inter this season while obi has been good. ahhhhhhhh shola ameobi recalled after 3 snubbing of nigeria a nonsense player for that matter 29 years old wow a nigerian would always have somme currupt in his mind because i know it is bribe siasia has taken

It will be good if some of the respondents here are a little more objective and sensible!! Rebuilding is a gradual process and only a maximum of 22 players can be fielded in a friendly. Yet, some people are reeling out more names?!! Would it make sense for him to invite 40 players because some people want him to invite stanley okoro, joel obi and others?

As for Ameobi, the guy has publicly said he wants to come. Let him come and show us what he can do. If he does not cut it, it will be glaring to all, us and him. Let us watch the match first, then we can assess the players, the team and the coaching crew.

Mike dnt be fast to jump into conclusions so easily .. like shijo said if he doesnt make the cut, he would be removed, i cnt blame this players for rejecting nigeria because of the way the Nfa is being runned. theres seems to be some stability , so why dont we give this players some chance.. im glad victor moses is in .
