Ten-man Stars hold Pirates

Posted: 22 December 2010 Time: 22:53

The 10 men of Platinum Stars put in a fine performance to hold Orlando Pirates to a 0-0 draw at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Indeed, Dikwena had the better of the chances and might even have walked away with all three points were it not for some fine keeping from Senzo Meyiwa in the Bucs goal, even after Lebo Ramolesa had received his marching orders.

Stars were the first to threaten when Ramolesa played an inviting cross into the Pirates’ danger area, but Thuso Phala, who was only left with Meyiwa to beat, directed his attempt wide.

Stars created a lot of chances in the opening period and looked odds on to score, but lacked composure in the box at times.

In a rare foray up the other end, Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini did well to deny Teko Modise what could have been an opener for the home side.

Stars suffered a serious blow when winger Lebo Ramolesa was red carded by referee Jerome Damon for a second bookable offence in 55th minute and Pirates understandably began to see more of the ball after that.

Patrick Malokase had the ball in the net, but the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker was adjudged to have been offside. Stars could have opened the score in the 77th minute through Phala, but he was again denied by Meyiwa in Pirates goal as the keeper parried his well taken shot.
