Pirates steal a win against Celtic

Posted: 12 December 2010 Time: 17:42

A late winner from substitute Patrick Malokase handed Orlando Pirates a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday.

Daine Klate had opened the scoring on 7 minutes, before Nathan Paulse got the equaliser for Celtic 13 minutes from time.

Bucs move up to the third on the table on 18 points (six adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns), while Celtic have dropped to sixth and remain on 16 points.

Pirates opened the scoring with a premeditated, training-ground move.

Moeneeb Josephs’ long goal-kick was superbly controlled in the Celtic penalty area by Klate before he cracked a left-footed volley past Patrick Tignyemb.

Celtic appealed vociferously for offside, but the goal was correctly allowed to stand.

The visitors gradually grew into the game and began to threaten, but Pirates continued to create opportunities from the wide positions.

Just after the half hour mark Segolela swung in a good cross from the left that was met by Thulasizwe Mbuyane, whose header rebounded off the near post.

The first half ended with a seven-minute spell of injury time, after earlier injuries to Lucky Lekgwathi and Moeneeb Josephs.

Lekgwathi took a heavy knock to the head in the first half and was replaced by Thando Mdluli for the second half.

Celtic were certainly the better team in the second half, and Nathan Paulse equalised with a low shot that beat Josephs’ right hand and went in off the inside of the upright.

After that it looked like Celtic were going to take the game, as they had all the momentum on their side.

But a lapse at the back in the 87th minute saw former Celtic star Patrick Malokase head the winning goal off a superb Ruben Cloete cross.
