Sundowns thump Aces

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 3-0 in a League match on Saturday evening.

An early strike from Katlego Mphela and a second half brace from substitute Papi Zothwane secured the deserved win for the Brazilians, though the final score line was perhaps slightly harsh on AmaZayoni, who had some good scoring chances of their own that they failed to capitalise on.

Sundowns started the game like a house on fire and their early endeavours were rewarded with a fifth minute goal from the returning Katlego Mphela. The Bafana Bafana striker clipped the ball over the diving Denis Onyango after a great pass from Elias Pelembe.

It proved to be Sundowns’ only genuine goal scoring chance of the first half, despite them bossing the game and enjoying the lion’s share of possession. Aces created a couple of opportunities, the best of which was a free header for Brice Aka in the 38th minute but he wasn’t able to trouble Wayne Sandilands with his effort.

Sundowns dominated in the second half and on the hour mark they carved out a great chance to double their lead, only for Khenyeza to miscue his shot after meeting Franklin Cale’s fine cross from the right flank.

Five minutes later the Mpumalanga team very nearly drew themselves level, with Maleka firing a volley just over the bar after getting on the end of clever flick-on from substitute Lottie Phiri.

With just over 20 minutes to play Papi Zothwane put the Brazilians 2-0 up, scoring with a deflection off the legs of Aces defender Marc Eberle after a great pull-back from Mphela to create the chance.

On 73 minutes Zothwane completed his brace by crashing a fantastic left-footed shot into the roof of the net, though once again he was aided by a slight deflection off an Aces defender.

Matthew Pattison should have made it 4-0 in the 89th minute but, after beating the offside trap and being faced with only Onyango to beat, he scooped his shot wide of the target.
