SA ref faced death threats in Nigeria

Posted: 2010-11-07 10:40

Referee Daniel Bennett faced death threats from Nigerian club Heartland FC’s fans, after a 1-1 draw in the CAF Champions League.

The Sunday Times’ reports that seven “large and angry” Heartland fans barged into Bennett’s dressing-room after the match against Algerian side JS Kabylie six weeks ago in Owerri, shouting: "Phone your family, because you won't be seeing them again."

Bennett had officiated - and ruled offside a late Chinedu Efugh effort that would have put the hosts 2-1 up.

"In Nigeria, you don't take that stuff lightly," Bennett tells the Sunday Times. "But I and my assistants just waited for help to arrive. If you react or get aggressive in those situations, you have serious issues. You don't look them in the eye, you just look calm. The police came in after about 10 minutes of nonsense."

Bennett will referee the second leg of the CAF Champions League Final between Esperance and TP Mazembe in Tunis on Sunday, and after Mazembe’s 5-0 scoreline in the first leg it should be an interesting encounter.

"Esperance will probably be diving all over the place early on, trying to get a penalty," he says. "And Mazembe will try time-wasting tactics. But I know both sets of players quite well, and I'll have great support from my assistants Zakhele Siwela and Luyanda Somi, and our fourth official, Abdul Ebrahim."

"They'll have my back. We'll deal with whatever happens."

The headline is out of place. When was the time Heartland played JS Kabylie and when is the news being reported?

this ugly incidents in football should be condenmed in nigeria.there should be fairplay in football.referees too should be alert to there responsibilities.up sia1.swona shld keep his mouth.nigerians hate cheating at least we are better than sa in ftball.

Cool Cat: 2010-11-07 13:01

Oka, Swona or what have you, i believe no one encourages violence but to insult a whole country on account of just 8 men is insulting your own intelligence and making mockery of your own educational up bringing, and this things happens daily in football, supporters do all they can to show their support to their teams including this and many more, that is why the FAs provide securities for them and one should really thank God they only warnéd him which shows Nigerians are peace loving people and would never endanger the life of a foreigner or any individual when it comes to sport, and they even going to warn him shows he has not performed his duty because in Nigeria no matter what happens we will tell you fearlessly where you erred and he should thank God it happened in Nigeria because else where , even in South Africa where you carry weapons indiscriminately, he might have been shot or in south America, they won´t take such bad officiating lightly, and as i repeat we abhors violence in all sporting and none sporting activities ,so i believe our football authorities would take note of this while making sure that other coming sporting events would be accorded more securities to protect all including officials.

@Anini, what do you expect from products of adulterated "OBE" and "Bantu" education. You expect too much from them. That is why you are disappointed when they express themselves like zombies. You guys should learn to ignore many of those South Africans who are morons. There are very few of them who can think but you can be sure many of them are plagued with inferiority complex. They will always be jobless when it comes to Nigeria issues. Thank God Nigeria is that important to preoccupy them that much while Nigerians dont even have their time when the news is about them. Leave them with their insecurities and low self esteem. You should pity them because the effect of apartheid has come to stay with some of them and they will never recover. It will always reflect in the way they think. Instead of facing their demons they are so much distracted and pre-occupied trying to put Nigeria down. Maybe someday redemption will come for them but it is not certain. Many of them are damaged in the head beyond redemption so dont try to reason with them like educated or civilized people. They are not.

@Oka & Swona & Mega, you asked what else is expected from us Nigerians? Is the same thing that is expected from your mother's & sisters in-between which is AIDS that you black slaves under whites are busy feeding each other in your country. Useless drunkards. One day you all will be wiped out of earth surface cos of AIDS and you will not come to this website again.

Udeme: 2010-11-07 22:15

@South Africans in this forum, though I don't support bad behavior but you guys should stop insulting Nigerians. This action was done by just 7 people out of 150 million people in Nigeria. STOP THE INSULT. By the way, bafana bafana player (Siphiwe TSHABALALA) was robbed at home by some robbers few days ago. Does it mean that all South Africans robbed Tshabalala?

lebohang: 2010-11-08 10:04

this thing is badly reported: what happened in the 10 minutes until the arrivalof the police. either benet exagerates or this is dramatised.

lebphenomenon: 2010-11-08 11:02

YOU nigerians forget that u are commenting on a South African website!!! when a fellow south african's life is threatened on what is percieved as bad officiating how do u expect us to react!!! the day yall stop acting like freaking animals and flooding and desrtoying our country is the day we'll stop with all the generalizations...

shlabane: 2010-11-08 11:50

the robbers who robbed simphiwe where probably nigerians from their newly found states of hillbrow with fake sa ID.

Mega and Swona, you both should know it that you south Africans are more violent than any sub-sahara country. and you call Nigeria names while you both forget that you are still ruled by the whites from across Atlantic. how did lucky die? peacefully in his bed or rather after a protracted illness i think. many others. Do reason before you open your stinking mouths dudes.
