Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Jabu Mahlangu has survived automatic relegation with Swedish Superettan club Osters IF after helping his team to a crucial win over the weekend against fellow strugglers Trollhattan in the last game of the season.
The 2-1 away win for Osters, in which former Kaizer Chiefs trialaist Olivier Karekezi scored, condemned Trollhattan to automatic relegation, sending them down to the third tier of Swedish football.
Osters, however, are not safe yet as they still have to play in the relegation play-offs along with Jonkopings Sodra, who finished 13th – one place above Osters.
In the relegation-promotion play-offs that begin this week, Osters will have to battle with Jonkopings along with lower division runners-up Sirius and Qviding FIF for the two places up for grabs in the Superettan.
Mahlangu’s contract with Osters expires in November after the play-offs.
Meanwhile, the Farouk Khan-coached Stars of Academy has directly exported yet another promising talent to Europe in the form of Bradley ‘Surprise’ Raleni, moving him to Sweden where has won a two-year contract.
‘Surprise’ joined Swedish Superettan side Landskrona earlier this year, but had to prove his worth first in order to be offered a contract extension.
After playing regularly in a season in which he scored seven goals as a supporting striker, Raleni has now convinced Swedish legend Henrik Larsson – who is the coach at the club – that he is worthy of being kept.
Landskrona finished the season in fifth position, with the 23 year-old playing an influential role.
Nadime Mohammed – an official from Stars of Africa who also deals with player representation – sounded excited about the contract extension that Raleni has been offered.
“This goes to show the kind of work that is being done at the academy where we are able to export players straight to Europe before they have even played in the PSL here at home,” says Mohammed.
