BidVest Wits beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 in a Castle Premiership encounter at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to a second half own goal Francis Chansa.
This was Pirates’ second League loss in a row.
The visitors looked the better side on the day but could not crack a solid Wits defence and squandered a number of decent scoring opportunities in both halves.
Wits’ new signing David Radebe had a scoring opportunity in the 9th minute but his shot was blocked by keeper Francis Chansa.
Two minutes later keeper Moeneeb Josephs blocked a good shot from Pirates’ Bennett Chenene.
Dale Studzinski had a slight chance but headed the ball straight at Chansa in the 18th minute.
Noah Chivuta came very close to scoring for Wits in the 28th minute when his left-footed shot went narrowly past the upright.
Josephs made another save from a Rudzani Ramudzuli shot and again in the 35th minute he was there to deny Chenene with another good stop.
In the 60th minute, against the run of play, Wits took the lead when a cross was headed back by Byrone Hendricks for Marawaan Bantam who hit his shot first time, the ball hit the post and rebounded off Chansa to go into the goal.
In the 67th minute Pirates had a good opportunity but Paulos Masehe hit his shot well wide from an angle inside the box.
Pirates had the ball in the back of the Wits goal in the 92nd minute but the goal was correctly disallowed by the referee for offside.
