Young Big Guns fire in CAF U-20 Championship

Young Big Guns fire in Africa

Posted: 2010-09-27 10:20

Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon reconfirmed their status among the elite of youth football on the continent with victories away from home during the weekend's first leg matches of the final round of the Libya 2011 CAF Under-20 Championship qualifiers.

By these results, the trio; semi finalists at the last edition held in Rwanda in 2009, appear in pole position to confirm their places at next year's 17th edition of the biennial tournament that pieces together the finest youth teams on the continent.

Ghana's Black Satellites, the reigning continental and global champions cruised to a 2-0 win over their Beninois counterparts in Cotonou.

Goals in each half from Enoch Ebo Andoh and Richmond Boakye Yiadom were enough for the Satellites to inch closer to qualification.

In Port Denis, midfielder Stanley Okoro and Bright Ejike were on target for the Nigeria's Flying Eagles as they silenced Mauritius 2-0 in front of their local fans.

The result served a sigh of relief for head coach John Obuh, who had come under a barrage of criticisms following the team's unusual performance in their campaign.

The Indomitable Cubs of Cameroon also managed a lone goal victory over their Congolese counterparts in Brazzaville.

Elsewhere at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, the Darling Scorpions of Gambia stung the Junior Elephants of Ivory Coast by a lone goal to remain in pole position for qualification. Real Zaragoza forward Saihou Gassama headed home the only goal of the match under one minute.

In Dakar, Senegal proved too strong for Egypt by beating them 1-0.

The second leg matches will be played on the weekend of October 22-24 with the winners joining hosts Libya for the final tournament slated from March 18 to April 1, 2011.

Weekend results:

Benin 0-2 Ghana
Congo 0-1 Cameroon
Kenya 0-1 Lesotho
Gambia 1-0 Ivory Coast
Senegal 1-0 Egypt
Mali vs. Gabon
Mauritius 0-2 Nigeria

Not being in this round is painful. What are SAFA doing to arrest the pathetic results of our junior teams? We need better coaches for all our teams in line with the appointment of Mosimane. Have we ensured that the current SA junior etc coaches are suitably qualified in terms of the necessary technical expertise for the specific age group? If we need technical consultants from Spain - they have expressed the willingness to assist us - then get them in quickly. Similarly let our teams learn from Holland and Germany who have historic links to this country and will gladly assist if asked. We need to come up to speed with the leaders of football in the world and these three teams proved that they are a cut above the rest in the world at the moment. Learning from them now cannot hurt, it will only benefit us in the long run as we have the best natural talent in the world. What we need is technical finesse and tactical understanding to deal with the modern game. The game against the USA is a wonderful test and I look forward to the contest.

Aston Villa to battle Tottenham and Everton for ODEMWINGIE
Published: September 28, 2010

* The days of Osaze Odemwingie in modest EPL side West Brom are numbered. Allnigeriasoccer.com understands Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspurs are keeping tabs on the striker.

Aston Villa lead the race for the signature of the former Lokomotiv Moscow player when the winter market opens in January. That's according to statements credited to one of Odemwingie's close confidant, Austin Uabor.

''Houllier is insisting on Osaze and Owen in January. He has known him (Osaze) since his days at the French League. The two goals Osaze scored against his former team (Lyon) about three seasons ago still remains fresh in his memory. Osaze has always been a player he admires so much due to his technical ability and pace. If West Brom is ready to do business, he will be a major target for Houllier," Uabor remarked.

"Owen will be close to completing his two-year contract with Man United and is expected to be a free agent in January. He will be comfortable with him as well, having worked together for five seasons at Liverpool."

Odemwingie was also linked to Tottenham in the summer transfer market, but his seven million pounds price tag was considered too heavy by Spurs.

''Redknapp was on the verge of signing him at the last summer transfer, but the deal couldn't sail through because of the high price tag placed on him by Lokomotiv. He had no choice than to settle for Van der Vaart of Real Madrid. Redknapp is still optimistic that he can come for him again for a low price, '' Uabor added.

Everton are also said to be interested in signing Odemwingie to solve their problems in attack. The 29-year-old joined West Brom for a reported transfer fee of €2.5million, and penned a two-year-deal with the club.

Flying Eagles stranded on Arrival
Published: September 28, 2010

* The Flying Eagles of Nigeria were yesterday stranded at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on arrival from Mauritius where they had gone to honour an AYC qualifying fixture.

The Nigerian Under 20 side had defeated the hosts 2-0 in Mauritius and were ordinarily expected to be given a heroic welcome but the opposite was the case as there was no official transportation to convey them from the airport.

According to The Nation, the lads were said to have left the Lagos airport in batches to their respective destinations. Some of them were said to have been helped away on arrival by friends while others left the airport in companies of twos and threes.

The Flying Eagles will host Mauritius in the second leg of the last round of the qualifiers late next month.
