Four Out Of Four For Downs

Posted: 22 September 2010 Time: 21:48

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their impressive start to the season with a 1-0 win over Santos on Wednesday night.

The Tshwane side were in control throughout the game against a Santos’ side whose priority much of the match was not to concede – they did not show too much attacking ambition in the first half especially.

They did have an early chance, but Sekou Camara was unable to profit from an Erwin Isaacs cross due to an untidy bit of control.

But Sundowns also had their opportunities early on as Tshepo Motsoeneng was forced to tip efforts from Katlego Mphela and Mathew Pattison over the bar.

Following that early flurry there was not much action as the Peoples’ Team remained solid in defence and frustrated all of Sundowns’ attacking forays.

But just before the break the Brazilians finally broke through when Katlego Mphela unleashed a grass-cutter from the edge of the area after creating space for himself.

Santos failed to really take the game to Sundowns after the break, despite needing to equalise.

As the game moved into the last 15 minutes it was Sundowns who had the better chances to score as Surprise Moriri and Mphela dragged efforts wide, while Franklin Cale was unable to score with only Motsoeneng to beat from close range, the keeper making a good save.

Santos ended the game with 10 men after Buitemelo Mafoko received a second booking.
