Segolela rescues point for Bucs

Tlou Segolela scored 10 minutes from time as Orlando Pirates drew 1-1 with Bidvest Wits.

Mark Haskins had give Wits the lead 11 minutes earlier but, on the balance of play, Bucs deserved a share of the spoils.

After a quiet start in which Wits dominated possession but were unable to create any clear scoring chances, the game gradually began to come to life, with Andile Jali firing the first warning shot with an effort that flew just over the crossbar.

Moeneeb Josephs then made two terrific saves to keep his team on level terms – turning away efforts from Wits midfielders David de Oliveira and Sifiso Myeni in the 22nd and 31st minutes respectively.

Yet the save of the game undoubtedly came from Energy Murambadoro, who tipped away a Chiukepo Msowoya shot that looked destined to ripple the back of the net.

The Buccaneers came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with a 39th-minute free-kick from Teko Modise that rattled the underside of the crossbar and bounced away to safety.

The early exchanges in the second half were somewhat scrappy, but it was the home team on top, pressuring Bucs in midfield and enjoying plenty of possession, though too often their final ball was poor.

Just before the hour-mark the Clever Boys did finally play a good ball into the box as Michael Morton crossed from the left, and it very nearly resulted in a goal – Geoffrey Sserunkuma got ahead of defender Ruben Cloete, but his header rebounded off the upright.

Ten minutes later Wits were rewarded for their persistence. Right-back Katlego Pule floated in a cross from the flank that Josephs seemed to lose sight of, and Haskins leapt ahead of the keeper to head home into an empty net.

Yet Wits’ lead lasted only until the 80th minute. Pirates broke free down the right through Thulasizwe Mbuyane, who drilled in a flat, hard cross that Murambadoro come off his line to try and intercept but completely missed – substitute Segolela needed only to direct his header on target to score and duly did so.
