Fabian McCarthy boosts Maritzburg United's defence

Maritzburg United have added experienced former Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy to their ranks.

McCarthy has signed a one-year deal with the option to extend the contract by a further year.   Team of Choice CEO Afzal Khan says the club is delighted with the signing.   "McCarthy brings a wealth of experience to the side. He has been training with the team for a couple of weeks and we have been impressed with his fitness, work-rate and hunger.   "His ability to lead the defence, to marshal the side from the back will be a huge asset to the team. He will be invaluable in guiding the younger players who can grow in stature by playing alongside a player like Fabian.   "We are confident that with McCarthy in the team, the squad is now well balanced and that we have depth in our defensive department," said Khan.   McCarthy has represented Bloemfontein Celtic, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows in an illustrious career.   He has close on 300 PSL appearances under his belt and has 10 Bafana Bafana caps and numerous Under-23 caps to his name.   "The team is now ready to fire on all cylinders and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing some fireworks against Golden Arrows in the KZN derby at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night. We encourage our supporters to turn up in their numbers as they did against Chiefs last week," added Khan.

Magnificent player he used to be. I am not sure he still has it but when he was at the peak of his career, overweight or not, you knew what you would get.

His pairing with Blantyre gave us the only Championships we have.

He banna, is KO inaccurate again in their reporting? I am not sure they implied that Mcarthy has been signed as a player when i thought he should be signed as a coach...phela he's old this man for playing.
