Zanaco end CS Sfaxs winning streak

Zanaco shocked CS Sfaxien of Tunisia at the weekend to win 1-0 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, recording their first victory in the CAF Confederation Cup mini-league phase.

The result also ended Sfaxien’s unbeaten run in the Confederation Cup this year. The Tunisians had drawn in all their away games well into to the mini-league stage.   A 31st minute goal from Zanaco striker and captain Winston Kalengo handed the Zambian club its first three points in Group B after three games to go level on four points with the two-time Confederation Cup winners from Tunisia.   Zanaco and Sfaxien both enjoyed some good possession in the opening quarter of the first half but it was the visitors who threatened first through their Nigerian striker Agba Uche unleached a sublime shot from outside the box in the 15th minute but sailed just above the cross bar.   Zanaco pushed forward with Allen Mukuka hitting the near upright on 18 minutes while Kalengo fluffed a shot from close-range eight minutes later.   Kalengo made no mistake in the 31st minute when he whipped in a speculative long-range effort that bounced in front of Sfaxien goalkeeper Jassem Khalloufi before rattling the back of the net.   In the 42nd minute, Sfaxien almost equalized through defender Mohamed Bouzidi but his header sailed high and over for touch.   Khalloufi was later called on to make a brave save from midfielder Henry Banda on 45 minutes to deny Zanaco a chance to extend their lead.   Sfaxien returned from the break with more purpose it almost paid off immediately with a goal when midfielder Ibrahima Toure muscled his way through Zanaco's defence in the 47th beating goalkeeper Titima but his effort surprisingly hit the upright to roll out of play.   Both Zanaco and Sfaxien then each had chances just before the hour-mark with Mukuka shot gathered by Khalloufi in the 54th minute while Youssoufou Maman flashed his shot from a tight angle on the near-post across the face of goal.   Sfaxien pressured as Zanaco elected to defend for the remaining 30 minutes of the game with the visitors best chance in a quality second half display from the Tunisians coming in the 83rd minute through captain Bargawi Chaker's whose effort went high and over for touch.   Two minutes later, Sfaxien's Mauritanian striker Dominique da Silva's almost got the equalizer but his shot was saved by Titima.   Zanaco striker Makundika Sakala wasted a fine chance to put the result beyond doubt deep into time added on with only the goalkeeper to beat but blasted his attempt off target before referee Ousmane Sidibe blew to end the game.
