Safa fires warning to SABC

Safa has warned the SABC that they need to up their game or risk losing the rights to Bafana Bafana matches.
The public broadcaster has always held the rights to the national team’s matches, but has come in for severe criticism from the public for the poor quality of the broadcast and the fact that soapies like Generations often take precedence to Bafana.
Safa will start contract negotiations with the SABC next month and CEO Leslie Sedibe has hinted that they could take the games to SuperSport, as the PSL did with the Absa Premiership three years ago.
“We know exactly what we want and we have already finalised our broadcast strategy,” Sedibe told the Business Day. “Obviously we want to continue working with the SABC but not under these difficult conditions. We cannot continue like this because the current contract is ludicrous.
“If we are unable to reach a deal, then we will have to take our business elsewhere. The new deal that we will propose to the SABC will not be very different from the one that the PSL has with SuperSport International.”
However, the SABC has hit back, with spokesman Kaizer Kganyago suggesting that Safa had already made up their minds.
“They are already talking about alternatives before we have even started discussions. Then you have a problem,” he said.
“Let them come to the table and then we can reach common ground. We do not want to say anything that will pre-empt what the discussions are going to be and how they are going to play out before they take place.”
