Egypt is may be without their skipper Ahmed Hassan when they take on Bafana Bafana in an Afcon qualifier in South Africa during the last week of March.
News is that Hassan will be sidelined for up to six months after the knee injury he picked up against Sierra Leone at the weekend turned out to be a cruciate ligament tear.
The Al Ahly midfielder grimaced in obvious pain after being pushed by an opponent in the second half of The Pharaohs' surprise 1-1 draw at home with the Leone Stars on Sunday.
Hassan was taken off 12 minutes from the final whistle and underwent medical examinations later on. It was confirmed that his injury requires surgery to repair the damaged ligament, which will result in a lengthy layoff.
"He will undergo an operation in Germany next week and the Egyptian FA will pay for it," Ahly's chief doctor Ihab Ali told FilGoal.com.
Hassan, 35, earned his 175th international cap against Sierra Leone to move to within touching distance of becoming the world's most capped player. He is two matches short of equaling the record of former Saudi Arabia keeper Mohammed Al-Deayea.
Meanwhile, the player has described his major knee injury as a ‘blessing from God' because it will give him the chance to rest after years of tireless work.
The 35-year-old is set to undergo knee injury in the near future and is expected to be sidelined for up to six months.
"I really need a break after the huge pressure I endured over the past years," the 35-year-old captain he told Nile Sports.
"It's the most serious injury I've ever sustained throughout my career. This could be my lengthiest layoff too. So far, the longest period I have spent away from football was three-month long, when I had my jaw broken.
"But I believe I can overcome my knee problem and become even better than before," he adds.
The former Anderlecht star will be in the stands for Al Ahly'ss crucial CAF Champions League clash against Nigeria's Heartland on Sunday.
