Eagles ease past Madagascar

Posted: 2010-09-05 19:55

Nigeria’s Super Eagles beat Madagascar 2-0 in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Group B match played at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Sunday.

It was not a convincing display for the star-studded Super Eagles, who raced into a two-goal lead before halftime.

Obafemi Martins opened scoring for the home team after 20 minutes when he got to the end of a loose ball on the top of the 18-yard box before he fired home past the impressive Madagascar goalkeeper.

Martins was again involved in the second Nigerian goal when he dribbled his way into the Madagascar box from the left before he delivered a low cut-back for Esperance striker Michael Eneramo to make hay with a tap-in.

Martins was again on target late in the second half, but Tunisian referee Jedidi Slim incorrectly disallowed this effort for a foul on the Madagascar goalkeeper.

Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who was mostly on holidays for the duration of the game, was called to make a finger-tip save with five minutes left on the clock. He scrambled away a goal-bound shot for a corner to the relief of the packed Calabar Stadium.

Both Eneramo and Martins had chances to give the Eagles a bigger home win.

Eneramo could have opened scoring as early as the first minute, but he stumbled when all alone with the goalkeeper, while the Madagascar shot stopper Masina made a point-blank save off Martins after the break.

Nigeria are now second in their group after Guinea ran away 4-1 winners also on Sunday in Ethiopia.

Both Guinea and Nigeria will square off in a decisive qualifier next month in Conakry.

There were full international debuts for former schoolboy international Stanley Okoro and Ahmed Musa, who finished top scorer in the Nigeria Premier League last season with 18 goals.

Though i do not watch this game...but i think the goal margin are very poor. this is our home.we should have won this game at least by 3goals. but anyway more grease to their elbow. i am looking forward for better improvement on their next game.good luck eagle. Nigeria won but let Nigeria be not deceived. Eguavon is still a spoiler. The Eagles were carried forward by the desire to Impress the Nigerian fans. Do not be deceived, we need a coach that is consistent.

The word.: 2010-09-05 20:14

Eguavoen is trying, maybe we should forget siaisa for now?

im not impress with the result.

madagascar would have gotten like 5 with SE of old.

The team was disjointed, shambolic, uninteresting and all dat, they won but they did not play well,i see the team with blunt ATTACK,porous MIDFIELD, and weak DEFENCE.To my suprise, the stadium was empty as fewer spectators turn out, even the spectators that turn out ashamed me as they did not dress in eagles green white green, but rather they use different jerseys from man utd, roma, chelsea, madrid.haba calabar pple,u na suppose dress in SE colors so as u can cheer them well.some decided not to go to the stadium bcos comin out, they risk their lives,as the security in the south is very poor,.finally, the coach eguaveon, lack the technical abilty to lead SE,he should be fired and i knw some of the big bois in SE r nt respctn eguaveon,.

Desmond2427: 2010-09-05 20:33

THE MOST IMPORTANT THANG IS THAT WE WON.HAVING SAID THAT,SE SHOULD BUKKLE UP HENCE MADAGASKA IS NOT A FORCE TO BE RECORN WITH WHEN IT COMES TO FOOTBALL.WE EXPECTED MORE FROM THE EAGLES.BEAR IN MIND THAT YOU GUYS STILL HAVE SEROUS HUDDLES TO CROSS,THIS TIME NOT THE LIKES OF MADAGASKA.BE SERIOUS FOR ONEZ.

Jimi Adesola : 2010-09-05 20:36

2-0 win is acceptable. NFF pls keep EguAveon. We do not need another coach until after the Cup of Nations.

Timi: 2010-09-05 20:36

It's a shame. Lagerback's team was much better than this even with same dead legs: atleast his team created begging chances and had a clear formation even when he had to take charge of a team some ten days to the world cup. He drew 4 and lost 2. He was promising but the only problem I had with him was the outrageous fee they claim they pay him.
Today Eagles hadly played and control possesion and to tell u how eazy Madagascar was, Yobo and ****u could leave there positions attacking. The midfield couldn't control the game and just imagine Eagles chasing the ball from the more enterprising young, immature madagascans. Eagles played the entire 2nd half and couldn't add a goal and now Guinea tops the gruop with goal difference.
No tactical measures from Equavoen: his players were just loading the ***** from defence to attack. Odewinge never had a business in that game. He was always feeling big and drawing the team back------- no wonder Lagerback never trusted him.
Okoro brought in same selfishness of his under 17-- always trying to impress.
Nigeria, when shall we learn? Leave sentiments, only the best can save us. God help us 'cos it seems we are getting it even worse!

This match exposed some of the problems that have been lingering in our football. In a bid to inpress on the people that are clamouring for use of home based players, Eguavoen made some changes that disorganised the Team play. we should be talking of using our best players irrespective of where they ply their trade. Why Remove Ajilore? What impact did the changes the coach made had in the team. We have our home based Eagles that have been not able to qualify for African Nations Championship that is meant for players based in Africa, always being projected as the solution to the problems we have in our Senior National Team. If Eguavoen continue as the Coach with this his Team and structure, It will be a disaster because we will struggle to qualify for The Nations cup . You don't use your National Team to develope your local League, You use your local league to develope your National Team if you have the structure that will retain some of your best players in your Local League. Bulk of the Brazillian Team that won 2002 nations cup play in Europe, Bulk of Dutch Team that played in 2010 World Cup play outside the Netherlands. The spanish Team that won the World Cup play their club football mostly in Spain beacuse they have a League that retain their best Players in their Top clubsides. Is EGUAVOEN A FIFA LICENCED PLAYER AGENT? DO WE HAVE SOME PLAYER AGENTS IN NFF? Who wants to project these players at cost.

osas: 2010-09-05 20:52

Any way, congrate SE we need more from u guys.I alway say our failure in world cup is not the players but the coach LARS.The coach have every time to chose good players only to chose the blind and stupid one, whose we see an enty net, only to fire the ball on wrong dirrecion. I still beleive we have a better players that can make us pride.

Surely Fifa will one day catch and can nigeria for using overage players

Segun: 2010-09-05 22:58

I thought Koreans are usually very fast at any level of the game. Where did the Nigerian girls get this kind of strength? The pace is electric. I played for 10 minutes yesterday and was panting for breath. I hope our male soccer can rise as we are witnessing in the female version.

Segun: 2010-09-05 23:03

Maybe, we have to start begging NFF. I am not in support of delaying the naming of a new coach till October 1. Are we going to another planet to get a coach. Other African teams are already regrouping after a disastrous world cup campaign. We may think that we have only CIV, GHA and EGY to battle, there are many more good teams springing up. Senegal just spanked DR Congo 4 - 2 away from home and they have been bringing up young players lately. NFF, save us some embarassment and name a substantive coach very fast.

donvyn: 2010-09-05 23:14

Forumite have started again, why can't u jsut for once appreciate what u have. d SE did not play well but they won still yet u want to crucify them under lagerbackward they play well according to u but nothing to show for itan i want to believe that majority alomost ended up in the hospital. as far as i'm concerned, win is a win if u like play woefully and get the result it is ok. My Chelsea don't entertain like ****nal who was the champion in EPL last season?
Up Eagle ride on.

Shame on Eagles you can not beat Madagascar with a wider goal margin then what will you come up with against Guinea?

ken gadaffi: 2010-09-06 10:27

It is the same old story..... Eagles either win without playing well or lose playing well. I still don't know what Nigerians want for the national team. Until Nigerians learn to remain content with what they have before aspiring to do better we will never get it right.

By the way a mock nations cup was held in Cambodia last week and south africa won the trophy...... read more here

Although them tried by winning the first Nations Cup qualifying series, that is that. But e no mean much towards the expectation of the fans because they (MADAGASCAR)wasn't big taste at all.

In respect of the game against madagascar and judgin from the various comment so far here, you all make various points in one way or the other.and talkng about eguavoen, the co ordination that was lacking in the match and the match spoilers display from the homebase players.these are important points to me generally.i guess you guys remember that it was the nfa that invited these players for eguavoen, there could have being more cohesiveness in the game if the coach had invited the players he can work with for the short time before the game.all thesame i wish the nfa never try this another time to invite players for whomever that is the coach of the super eagles.

Nigerians are easy to please, give them a short term vision and they are all over it. give them a 2-0 win over a team like madagasca and they will have Egwafun as a couch.. but when they loose to teams like Ghana, Cameroon or even korea they shout again.. do u want a team that u will be proud of for years to come? then give siasia the job, he knows how to find young talents or look for another man that is capable... Egwafun was sacked years ago n u still want to give him the job, are u moving foward? indecision is ir biggest problem....

We deceived FIFA, Nigerians, Ogba confesses

IMMEDIATE past Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Obinna Ogba, at the weekend stunned the country when he confessed to the many lies concocted by the NFF to keep its members in power, including deceiving world football governing body, FIFA, on the state of Nigerian football administration.
Ogba, in an interview published by a local website, The Nigerian Social Worker, also revealed that the NFF makes over N1.2 billion annually from sponsorship, admitting as well that the federation got a court order stopping the elections, which saw the emergence of Aminu Maigari as the new president of the body.
On the court injunction, Ogba said: “It’s true that there was a Lagos court order served on the NFF board. I am aware that Super Eagles’ former player, Chikelue Iloenyoesi, served the injunction on Aminu Maigari. The assistant secretary general of the federation presented it at our last board meeting.
“Based on the premise that the present federal government under President Goodluck Jonathan respects and stresses its official mantra in the rule of law, board members reasoned and all agreed that the election be postponed on that ground. It was part of our communiqué. The Congress vetoed it; remember, too, that the congress is the highest organ of decision in the game.
“The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Patrick Ekeji, even called myself, the then acting president, Aminu Maigari, and Dominic Iorfa to advise the NFF board to obey and respect the court order. They wrote us in that effect and left us to take the decision.”
On the decision to keep the truth from FIFA, Ogba said “there was an advocacy that the board should keep quiet and refuse to tell FIFA about the court order. Here, let me tell you, a member of the board, Dr. Peter Singabele, met with the CAF and FIFA observers and let them know of the court order, which he showed them.
“In principle, FIFA was aware of the court order but a clique of people hiding under the cloak of FIFA decided to manipulate the Congress to ignore the court and conducted the election.”
Ogba revealed that the election into the present board was manipulated by some people, who wanted to continue controlling Nigerian football, adding that there was no way an outsider would have won a seat on the board. According to him, “the former leadership of the board under Sani Lulu had the delegates in their firm grips. Their loyalty to him is 100 per cent.
“He dictated the outcome of the election. I have no regrets about how we got to this position. I can’t spit and go back to lick the spit. I have a name to protect. The impeachment was done to save Nigeria’s face and Nigerian football. Nigerians wanted and applauded what we did.
“For those who spit on the ground and went begging on their chest and licked their spittle in the process, so be it. None of us that signed the impeachment returned. It’s okay.
“I wish the others would take it in good faith and watch the proceedings. It’s only change that is permanent in life. Something will soon happen. Watch out.”
Ogba described most of the people controlling Nigerian football of as jobless men, stating: “Football administration is their full time job. They can’t survive outside football. To me, it’s a hobby. I’ve returned to my politics and business.
“Candidly, we needed to have used the will of the Sports Minister, Ibrahim Bio, to got it right once and for all. We have squandered it. This opportunity may not come our way again. Anyhow, at worst four years is by the corner.”
Ogba, who was chairman of the Marketing and Sponsorship Committee in the last board, revealed that the board generated in a year about N1.2 billion, but failed to reveal how the money was spent. He also denied knowledge of the actual amount of money that accrued to the board from sponsorship, FIFA and the Federal Government.
“By now I hope the EFCC would have gone deep enough into the matter,” he said. “I hope they will be able to make public their findings. They will know the individual involvement as it concerns money.
“I was just a board member. I do not have approval limits or powers. Mine is to attend meetings and contribute my quota and return to my state. I don’t know how much was generated.
“I know that a lot of monies came into the coffers of the NFF during our tenure. Our board participated in all FIFA, CAF and WAFU competitions. These will require so much money to prosecute. I am not defending anybody but I also do know that most of the things that were done during our time did not pass or get approval of the board. The records are there to show.
“For instance, when we returned from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the president told us there was no money to pay the legitimate allowances of board members. We believed him, only for the EFCC to freeze our account and got to know how much was there. It baffled us.”
On government interference on the affairs of the NFF, Ogba admitted that the Federal Government funds the federation, and therefore had the right to inquire how the money was spent. He stated: “We are all aware of the fact that Decree 101 is an existing law. It is on the strength of that the National Assembly appropriates funds for the NFF.
“Our board lied to FIFA that Decree 101 has been repealed. This is not true. This is fraud. For government to have put money in the NFF, taxpayers’ money, she has a right to ask how the monies are spent. That does not amount to government interference. This is a part of the primary duty of good governance.”
