Bafana Bafana midfielder MacBeth Sibaya says he is not bothered by talk that his time with the national team is nearing its end.
The Durban-born defensive midfielder has had to face questions regarding his age, 32, since Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane was quoted saying "I don't want to be stuck with old players when I am in Brazil for the World Cup" citing Sibaya as an example saying the fact that he will be 36 when the tournament kicks off in four years means he must gradually blood in the youngsters in the team.
However, Sibaya has since been called up for the Ghana friendly international and again he is in the team to face Niger tomorrow at the Mbombela stadium for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Sibaya says: "I knew from the beginning that one day I will leave the national team and I knew around this age I will face this kind of questions," he says. "I still believe I play a very important role in the national team regardless of the age and the age thing doesn't bother me at all. I still have a lot to contribute in the national team," he says.
"The experienced players in the team don't get the feeling that our contribution is now underestimated. We are given a chance to give advice when it is possible so we do feel that the experienced players still have a big role to play in the team," he continues.
Meanwhile, Sibaya says he is excited at the prospect of facing Barcelona after his Russian club Rubin Kazan was drawn in Group D as the Spanish giants for this season's UEFA Champions League.
"It is very exciting and a team like Rubin always wishes we could meet the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid. Fortunately, last season we came up against Barcelona and again this season we have them in our group. I believe we have a very good chance of progressing beyond this group, because against Barcelona last season we got three points at the Camp Nou and drew with them at home.
"We also have Panathinaikos and FC Copenhagen in our group, which are teams at our level, so I'm confident we can progress through," Sibaya concludes.
