Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has described the £13m capture of Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan as a great piece of business.

Bruce smashed Sunderland’s record transfer fee of £10m spent on Darren Bent to take the former Liberty Professionals striker from Stade Rennes in France to the Premiership on a four-year deal and is delighted to finally have him in his ranks at the Stadium of Light.

He said: “It’s a hell lot of money and we all know that in today’s climate but fair play to the owner he understood the necessity for it and it is a fantastic signing for us.

“Good result over the weekend and we have managed to bring in another top class striker so great of piece business for us and we are all delighted.”

Bruce says Gyan will greatly compliment England striker Darren Bent who has been in great goal scoring form for the club.

“I have loved his enthusiasm. I tried to sign him last summer it wasn’t possible. He has got a huge appetite for the game, he works extremely hard and he will give us something different that we haven’t got. He leads the line, he is a traditional number 9 if you like and we will benefit from that.”
